How about the Mayor and City Council trouble shoot his salary and cut it. Why is he the only city employee that gets his health care paid for? A $12,000 car allowance, what kind of car is this for? Isn't that what City Vehicles are for???

The article “City Employees Can Vote On Ways to Trim the Budget (in beachcombing of the November 1 Beacon) would have been simply informative if it were not so disheartening. City Manager Spore reportedly is soliciting comments from City employees on actions that might be taken to reduce the $49 million deficit. These include potential layoffs, eliminating take-home vehicles, reduction in services, etc. He did not include another option - returning all or part of his recent pay raise in order to share the grief. Incidentally, his base salary is comparable with that of the Vice President of the United States. Equally disheartening is the fact that City Council (less one member) approved his pay raise (on top of an already hefty compensation) when it had to know that a huge deficit was loomimg and that stern remedial actions would be required. I would appreciate City Councils comments explaining the justification for big raises to top officials in a time of fiscal stress, exacerbated by the potential for worker pay cuts, etc.

The Mayor of NYC receives a dollar a year for his salary. Yes he can afford it but the pay scale that is allotted for a NYC Mayor is about $190,000 a year. He need to to get real!

As a public servent I think this man makes too much. We need to call Obama's Czar and have him make a recommended adjustment.

Do your research and find out exactly what this job entails and what good Spore has done for our city before rushing to judgement and writing with such hate for a man we do not even know. Melanie, Did you get a City Manager's Award for writing this? Was it $500.00? I hope it was as good as the 30 silver coins? Did I just hear the rooster crow?

Ok people first a little perspective: Va Beach has the lowest residential property tax rate in the region along with the highest level of city services/best school system. Nearly every state & local government is facing a budget shortfall due to a global economic crisis that has caused lower revenues and despite that (& regardless of the majority of yall's reactionary populist rantings to the contrary) VB taxes have not been raised nor is that a current proposal. These are facts. Good government doesn't just fall from the sky and believe it or not, that is what we have in Virginia Beach (at least locally and for the most part). And you can bet you life that it isn't because of any expertise on the part of the city council.

now for some direct responses... To Citizen's Are Hurting and the others, including the lame excuse for a media outlet WTKR, who were astounded by comparision's of Spore's salary to other government positions(Governor, Senator, NYC Mayor etc.) here are the causes for the differences: they are elected politicians not hired professionals, and they leave office and become obscencely wealthy lobbyists/policitical prostitutes. Spore on the other hand has held his position for 18 years, and has decided to serve the public w/o bolting for the real $$ of the private sector. This is the whole point of having a city manager instead of the political games, partisan hackery, and outright corruption that comes with political leaders in professional positions.

Pounce, Bob! I don't know what prompted WTKR to expose your friend Jim Spore, but I think it is terrific!
Could this lead to a forensic audit for Va Beach? Only the "shadow knows", because the "7-2" voting bloc has shielded Spore from scrutiny.
In any case, this is a good time climb on this mis-informed fraud.

Va Bch Emp - Bch Resident: if you think Spore has ruined the city maybe you should move onto greener pastures, we obviously have a ton of others in Va Beach that will moan and complain mindlessly while you're gone (I'm saying we won't miss ya).
Ken: "Fire Jimbo I'll do the job for 31k, anyone with a high school education can balance a budget if there is money to balance" So ignorant I'm unconvinced you have a high school education, but whatever, just do the grown ups a favor and don't run your mouth about things you obviously don't understand.
Jack W: "This is what Thomas Jefferson warned us about" Really man? Really? Don't even know what to say about that one, just wanted to highlight the absurdity.

I am a satisfied citizen of Virginia Beach, and think that WTKR has a responsibility to report, with an unbiased tone, actual news, not opinion pieces masquerading as news. It frustrates me that no one actually listens past what they want to hear. If those who keep thinking that he is receiving a raise this year, actually listened to the report, they would find that he in fact isn't, and that the city council voted to renew his current contract, not increase his salary. If concerned citizens are reading these comment threads for some clarity, I would hate for them to only find one-sided responses from ill-informed sources.

To answer your question it's pretty clear that Bill DeSteph prompted this because he has a political axe to grind/sucks at life and therefore tries to make the lives of city staff miserable as well, through childish behavior and cowardly B.S. such as this. DeSteph is the real fraud, only out done by the fraudulence of this deceitful hack Dan Tordjman masquerading as a journalist.

Not to mention I'm willing to bet that you are one of these people that gripes about what public workers (cops, firefighters, teachers, etc.) get paid, and then with a complete lack of self-awareness will turn around and unabashedly denounce the Stimulus package (which has kept ALOT of public workers from losing their jobs) or paying taxes. I completely agree that these people do extremely important jobs and should be paid more, but guess what you gotta pay for it with government spending (gasp!). And by the way, if the relatively low salaries of other city workers is your main problem, unthinking attacks on Jim Spore's compensation isn't going to solve that. Even if he decided to work for free that would accomplish what exactly? A 30 dollar a year raise for each employee?

If the main problem you are referring to is an increase in his salary, please listen to the whole interview. He has not taken a raise in the last few years, and by his own request, had the city council shorten his contract time so his salary is not automatically assumed every year. He also says that he would not ask for pay cuts without taking one himself.

Bill DeSteph is the single courageous leader on our city council who is willing to question the status quo. Under Mr. Spore's watch, city spending and debt have exploded in the last ten years. Revenues are falling, yet the city continues to issue more and more debt to finance special projects and pay the fixed cost of debt service. You have to wonder how well Mr. Spore is managing the budget when just three short months ago, he was floating the idea of a 2 cent real estate tax increase to finance $95 million in new projects. Now suddenly, the Town Hall budget meetings indicate it's going to take a 4 cent tax increase just to fill a $49 million budget hole, never mind about the new projects. Mr. Spore's refusal to submit his personal salary to the same cost-cutting scrutiny he intends to impose on his own staff indicates just how disconnected he is from his own employees, as well as the tax-weary citizens he supposedly serves.

As a resident of this City and a taxpayer we the PEOPLE in Virginia Beach need to vote out the current council members one by one with the exception of Bill DeSteph who seems to be the ONLY council member that is actually for the people!! Spore's contract was passed by a 10 to 1 vote while our mayor feels he is underpaid.
You take the entire City work force and residents like myself who are tired of this and we could vote these people out. We need to send a message loud and clear. Council members work for us the people what better way for us to show who's boss by getting rid of them!!! Once they see they are losing their seats one by one changes will be made. LET'S WORK TOGETHER AND VOTE THEM OUT!!!
