The bagging your own groceries is only at the Bottom-Dollar stores, not the new Bloom "upscale" stores that the story is about. If you don't want to bag your own groceries, don't shop at Bottom-Dollar.

Are you friggin kidding. You have to bag your own groceries at Food Lion. Hell, you basically have to scan your own groceries. At least if you want to get out before closing.

Food Line...not Food Lion! Let's get it right. The one in Hayes alwasy has a long checkout line, one clerk on duty at peak times while all the other workers scatter to look busy doing something else.

I guess the Hayes store isn't considered upscale enough for the Bubbas to get a Blooms.

I prefer Farm Fresh anyway...now that's high end for Gloucester!

I have now shopped at both Bloom in Williamsburg ... what a major improvement and great stores to shop.

Thank you for making the change and updating your stores.

Laburnam Avenue is open for business re bloom.
I have not been there & I stick with Ukropts FarmFresh, until someone says a postitive comment on the store.

You have to bag your own groceries at bloom's?

Ty out Trader Joe's, you will love it.

I haven't been in a Bloom yet because they are way in Williamsburg and way out there in Va Beach but I have been in a Bottom Dollar. It is definitely a downgrade from a Food Lion. The store feels ghetto and very lowend, carries a very limited and poor selection, carries outdated goods and knocks only a few cents off, and it attracts an unprofessional, unsavory and uncouth workforce/clientel. Their produce selection is not acceptable at all in my opinion. Bottom Dollar also carries very low end brand meats, while Food Lion gets the midgrade brand and Bloom gets the more quality angus beef. This is true and it was confirmed by the employees/butchers in both Bottom Dollar and Food Lion. It would be good if we could refuse to shop at Bottom Dollar (which is owned by an foreign country company called Delheize) and shop at Farm Fresh, Harris Teeter, Kroger, Trader Joes, and even Wal-Mart. I mean even Wal-Mart is alot better...and they are more consistent unlike Food Lion which will put their ghetto stores only in certain areas and put their better ones deep in the suburbs. Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Suffolk don't have Blooms but Williamsburg, Chesapeake, and Va Beach does...tells you something..doesn't it.

I overheard a conversation concerning the Bottom Dollar on Coliseum Dr. in Hampton, evidently this person was shopping there on a Sunday Evening and was approached by a couple of black men wanting money, kept eying her purse, after being told a few times she didn't have any extra money to give away...they not only approached her again, but several other customers....no security at that store...scary

See that's scary. A store like Bottom Dollar, which attracts an unsavory element, needs security. Even though Wal-Mart can attract a bad clientel, at least they attract alot of shoppers and have some type of security in the store and parking lot. If you want to get bargains, go there.

Gone are the days that when you went grocery shopping or just out, you felt safe, not anymore.Guess its the sign of the times.

I go to Hampton's Wal Mart. Not a great place but I have never feared for my life because, as a previous poster says, there are always plenty of people around the parking lot and it's pretty well lit. The other thing is to try not to dress like you have a few bucks. Better to dress down in your tackiest jeans, sweats and don't dangle a big purse from your shoulder.

You are so right, I usually wear my grubs, and I never carry a purse....Drivers license and debit card in my pocket. So I never feel threatened... Things are going to get bad, especially with the way the economy is right now, unemployment high, so you just really have to be aware of your surroundings.

If a 14 yr old came out of the bushes last year at Patrick Henry Mall to steal a purse and shoot the hand of a woman then what do you think this year might be like? It's not easy to feel safe going out Christmas shopping this year.
