Gloucester could pay thousands for indicting supervisors

Convening the special grand jury that indicted four Gloucester County supervisors on charges that never reached trial has cost county taxpayers about $2,200. The figure doesn't represent the probe's total cost ...

The SGJ cost $2200.00.
This figure does not include the probes total cost due to the officials involved bad record keeping. They did not keep track of the time spent working on this case.

The defense fees not included as well.
It could reach tens of thousands of dollars which the COUNTY may be compelled to pay.

"THE COUNTY" translates to "THE TAXPAYERS". I'm sure there are places the taxpayers would rather this money go. Now everyone is going to find out what the term "Repent at leisure" means.

Don't you think they deserved representation? Don't you think they had a "right" to defend themselves against all these accusations? Why should they have to pick up the tab caused by false accusations? Let their accusers step up and pay for it.

Is it not appropriate, that if the COUNTY has to pay for their representation, both their accusers AND supporters tax dollars will used to pay for their folly. Do you think they will reimburse their supporters for their loss? Did not think so.

No, I don't think their supporters will be reimbursed. That is just one more example of how Gloucester County has been divided, and over something that should have been taken care of at the ballot box. This whole thing was not well thought out from the very beginning. It's a shame and a pity, don't you think? If these four BOS had been left to govern in their own way, they wouldn't have done as much damage to Gloucester County as this recall attempt has done.

We will never know how the FAB4 would have governed had they not been denounced for their actions. Would they have assumed that such action were appropriate and continue that way, or once their deeds were done, they would have settled down to rule the county via their 5-2 or 4-3 votes. I think the citizens of Gloucester would have done more damage to Gloucester if they had not availed themselves of their legal right to question the actions of elected officials via the petition.

You are correct in say "we will never know". But I have serious doubts that the 4 BOS could have done as much damage as the present folly has. Aside from the money this is going to cost the taxpayers, it has torn friendships, and in some cases, families apart. Even though I no longer live there, I hope you realize that I am sincere in my hope that you all can find a way to put this behind you and regain the trust and friendships you all had before. Politics can be a fearsome game to dabble in.

Don, relax. They're just playing the emotive card to see who they can get riled up! My guess is that the BOS 'revenge' will be more of a personal nature. It would not be real intelligent for any of them to pursue public money at this time. The two I've talked to have no intentions of using public monies. So don't listen to the gossip queens. They don't have the guts to even call and politely ask any of the sup's their real intentions. Queens got no balls! It's just more 'Sabo' crap.

Remember when the Pastorvisor and Crewes' attorney threatened the public/petitioners with lawsuits? For defamation of character? Laughable, but don't think that that card is off the table yet. Have been hearing rumblings of this again.

I hadn't heard that one before. But I don't think that will happen. Nobody forced these people to run for office and put themselves out for public scrutiny and criticism. It kind of goes with the territory, even if it sometimes goes over the top.

I don't believe that the BOS folks would ever come after individual petition signers. Many of them were lead blindly into signing.
I did not read the petitions to see how they were worded but depending on the wording, I wouldn't consider it far-fetched for BOS memebers to come after the few individuals who wrote/filed them. I hope the GCCFAR pioneers saved a few $ for legal repreesenation just in case ;-)

If a person was charged with murder or robbery or a petty crime, and then the charges were dismissed or dropped..would the county then be required to pay their legal costs? I have never heard of such a thing...

That's one of the differences between a civil action and a criminal action. Good grief! If the county had to pay for all the nolle prossed cases we'd already be bankrupt!

We should all know soon enough. They money would have to be appropriated by the BOS. This would have to be done in open session. They will have to take a public vote. And they can't vote on something they will receive a benefit, so they will have to abstain. So Ressler could bring up a motion for TA's legal expenses be paid by the county and the vote would be taken, with TA abstaining. So do you think Rick Allen, Theberge and Rilee would vote FOR paying her fees? Probably not, but it will still have to be a public vote. 3 to 3 tie, would be mean no payment for legal fees.
