This is heartbreaking. I know the woman in the other car and I know this is just tearing her up inside. Please please PLEASE everyone, use this as a lesson in A) making sure to stop at EVERY red light, and B) making sure you always wear your seatbelt and make sure your kids are properly buckled in as well. This tragedy easily could have been prevented. My thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.

Same sentiments as Anonymous here. The other driver is my friend, also, and her life is shattered. She said a truck was ahead of her and she followed him out into the intersection, as she perceived the light as green. He got through to the other side; she did not. She is a very careful and conservative driver; when something is an accident it means that no one intended for this to happen. We are all frail human beings, sometimes we goof up and no one is the worse. Sometimes that isn't the case. Like this time. May God have mercy and send comfort to all involved.

My wife was a witness to this horrific accident. The green left turn light had turned on in her favor as she faced the opposite direction on Dam Neck road. The victims' SUV entered that intersection long after the left green arrow. If the Scion was in the wrong, so was the SUV. The man confessed to my wife that he had miscalculated and had thought that the lights on this intersection had a delay. Some cities have delays in which during a light change, the red light will be shown for all traffic directions to ensure the intersection is cleared prior to turning turning on the green during a light change. Our hearts go out to this man and his family and the victims, but he was also in the wrong.

I have a HARD time believing that the husband would tell someone "I miscalculated the timing of the light"...For Gods sake, his daughter was lying dead on the pavement and his wife in the grass....Dont think he was chit chatting about the light!

No Sir, he was not standing around chit chatting. He was just screaming hysterically as he scolded himself for his misjudgment. My wife was standing next to him while she was on the phone with 911 who had asked her to see if someone new CPR. She peeled his fingers off the limp body of the little girl and told him he might injur her further before EMS arrived, and embraced him and told him to have faith in God. It hasn't been a picknick for her either having flashbacks of the incident.

Is the blame game appropriate right now? God Bless each one who is touched by this loss.

True the lady may have ran the red light but the man driving the suv should be charged also. Va law is to buckle up and in a crash the driver is responsible for the people in there car. If the wife unbuckled her belt then the right thing for him to do would be pull over till she is buckled up again. There lives could have been saved if they were buckled in as they should have been. I would hate to loose anybody in this way and the lady that was driving the scion is most likley tore up inside over what has happened. But the law is the law. If she is charged then he should be also. But lets not jump the gun here till the police finish there work.

To reply to JER: Oh my god what ever!
Its a shame I myself use to live their always in a hurry cell phones to the ears and rushing! MY have you ever had to get out of a seat belt to make sure your child was ok and in one. It happens you call it being a good mom not thinking of yourself. Tanya was a wonderful mom. And how can you stop at the Beach and pull over unless you want to get hit on side of the road. Anyway my heart goes out to John and his family may God be with you all.

There are parking lots everywhere and pull offs. I live at the beach. I tow a lot of trailers and if something does not feel right I pull over asap where it is save and check. I answer my cell phone I will ask them to wait and I will pull over to take it. People are worried about getting somewhere fast and not the as I said if the lady is charged then he should be also because in the letter of the law he is as wrong as she is. Everybody SLOW DOWN and smell the coffee and get there safe.

If either one of these dear people involved read this I do not believe it will contribute to a healing process. Everybody should slow down and everybody does make mistakes. I can't imagine the torment either individual must be going through. I don't know them and I only know about this because I read the article in the Pilot last the other night. At that time no details were given but I remember going off to bed with a bad feeling about this accident. The next morning when someone told me of the details I was terribly bothered by this. I have continued to think about them today too. Some stories just transend the normal. I know good people die in untimely deaths everyday. I don't know why this one has grabbed my emotions like it has. Maybe I do after all.

TO mgkid and JER,
What the hell is the matter with you!! A woman and her child is dead and all you can do is play the blame and what the drivers should have done game. The focus should be on the survivors of this horrific accident and how their lives have changed forever. Society is going to hell in gasoline underpants and comments of blame only add to the flames. If you weren't there personally just pray for those involved and to JER who's wife was there pray for her and keep your second hand accounts to yourself you have only added to the pain of the families. I pray this does not happen to any of you,as I have experienced this first hand and blaming only prolongs the pain and anger.
