If you have school age kids and can't afford private school: STAY AWAY FROM HAMPTON. If you want to have more kids STAY AWAY as you'll have to go to NN to witness the birth. If you think you may like living close to a BEACH STAY AWAY as you won't be able to find parking....

Stay away from Virginia because of high taxes.

Commute from the Outer Banks/Moyock area NC if your job requires you to be in the Hampton area. It's about an hours drive from Hampton in heavy traffic. You may think it's a bit of a drive but these areas are much more beautiful areas than Hampton ever THOUGHT about being. Plus you are much closer to beautiful scenery and a REAL beach (Duck, etc). Weigh all your options carefully, best advice I can give is to RENT not BUY, LEARN about the area first and if you decide on Hampton, I wish you the best of luck!

Before moving to Hampton Roads, you may want to wait to see what happens with ODEC's proposed 1500MW Coal Plant in Surry County ... Hampton and the rest of Hampton Roads will be downwind from the baseload coal plant that would run 24/7. More info from various places including my blog: bambismusings.wordpress.com/tag/coal-plant

Newport News has it all, from competitive rec athletics (Have you seen NN 12 year old boys play rec? It is rather extreme.) to technology (Jefferson Lab, the Shipyard, NASA and the Applied Research Center are all rather extreme in their various niches.)to access to an international destination resort (Va Beach is rather a big deal, even if we take it for granted) to potential for economic development (Nowhere to go but up!)

Wait a minute! Are we talking about the same Newport News, Virginia? This area has absolutely nothing to offer. It is a tax take all your money city. The place is crime infested. Any city has recreation centers.

A local AAU baseball team just won the U16 national championship. We are the sole source for US Aircraft Carriers, which, like it or not, are state of the art. We have Jefferson Lab, which makes NASA, next door in Hampton, look like quaint 20th century pikers. Taxes are too high, and schools could use improvement. As is the case anywhere, some elements lack self motivation in the presence of federal assistance, but they pretty much keep their shootin' to themselves.(They all carry guns, but none of them ever seem to wear bullet proof body armor. Why is that?)

NY has about 8 million people and this area about 400 k counting both cities. Ratio wise, this area has a higher crime rate than NYC. It takes 40 minutes to drive to or from Denbigh to Hampton, average speed comes to about 4 mph if one figures in total time & distance, unless it's 3 am. The speed limit in NN is 25 everywhere. I totally avoid it and go all the way over to 64. I just find it amusing that anyone who has lived in this area would defend it as if it were Mayberry, NC..the fictional town.

For everyone considering moving here to the Hampton Roads area. I moved here 14 years ago. Things have grown a lot in that time frame. I am a Realtor with Century 21 Wm. Farmer and if you care to get in touch with me I can help by giving you an idea of how much a home costs here by e mailing you listings. It is a great place to live. We have the zoo, opera, live plays, lots of museums, free entertainment at the ocean front every weekend and all the other areas too. We have so many parks and beaches. If you like these kinds of perks you will love it here and I did not mention we have a lot of colleges and a medical college. Most of the schools are decent and we have a lot of churches. I can be reached at the office. This beats living in the cold, snowy areas any day.

How come real estate brokers are immune from the same criticism as everybody else who has been selling product to the public at inflated prices?

,<>Most of the schools are decent<> Oh really? And how? What are the average SOL scores in Hampton & NNPS compared to New Kent,Poquoson? What is the ethnicity of teachers in this are, their degrees? What is the crime rate, just plain vandalism of cars in the area? Why are there Police blogs at the Comunity Center warning about crime specifically Hampton? Now the zoo part, you got correct. We live in a zoo.

Crime was wayyy worse back in the 90's in Hampton. This was before they tore down Pine chapel village and sinclair gardens, 2 of the most crime ridden nabes in hampton at the time. Now it's considerably better imo, i've driven through pine chapel once, worst experience ever in my entire life. Lincoln park doesn't even compare to how Pine chapel was.
