Judge it!The Unions caused this problem. They want high paying jobs for assembly jobs. They want job security, they want pensions, they want, they want. For what? What concessions do the unions give the companies? The concession for the company is to close the plant and move it to Mexico, China, India, Thialand, etc. The company cannot be competitive with overseas companies, due to Union greed. There is no job security, no more pensions, no more $40/hour + benefits jobs. Not for the assembly worker....sorry. I come from a union family. Gone are the days of those types of jobs. In this global economy, only the fit survive, not the fat and happy union jobs...<quoted text>
Whatever makes you think the union has any control over management decisions. Union agreements only cover working conditions and wages during the life of the agreement, has no control over anything else.

Or you could look at it another way. The workers in Tennessee are non-union so they'll make 10 dollars an hour with less benefits. If we could ever repeal taft-hartley and get rid of these so called "right to work" laws, we could improve the rights of workers all over the US and not have our employers flee to states where they can better exploit workers. |

These were 14-15 dollar an hour jobs and if you'd ever been to an Essex plant or smelled one of the employees who worked there, you'd see that they earn every penny. It's not an easy job and it's performed under uncomfortable conditions. |

I presume you are one of those that is either just mouthy or one of those who think, you aint nothin unless you have a college degree, well let me say this, those that built this country were lucky to have an 8th grade education, just having paper work and a fancy resume, doesnt get the job done, nor does it guarantee common sense or success. Well I think that is really horrible , I know alot of people that worked out there and had for many years!
My brother-in-laws brother worked out there for as long as I have known him and I was 10 when my sister married my brother-in-law I am now 46..so that is at least 36 yrs that he worked there what happens to him and his family now? Will those who have worked out there get compensation of any kind? |

I believe the companies that go to Mexico pay very poor wages. Less than a dollar an hour and hire mostly women. Mexicans can come to the US and make minimum wage which is 5 times what they can make in Mexico and basically are men that can’t get work in the factories. But what is even more ridiculas is most companies that moved to Mexico years ago are now moving to China and Asia because the labor is cheaper there and no regulation by their Governments. I saw on TV that the penny and the nickel are in trouble. It cost the government 2 cents to make a penny and a dime to make a nickel. Maybe we should have China make our money for us also? |
Pretty slick, assuming all employees at the Essex plant only have High School educations. They are throwing "higher educated" company people out the door just like the production workers. I know first had because I work there... Thanks for the offensive comments... |

Reguardless of whom is at fault here the simple fact remains that the plant is closing and taking with it the income that so many people and their families depend upon. Instead of pointing fingers, maybe we should be asking ourselves what will happen to the towns like vincennes where employment like Essex is disappearing at an alarming rate and what can we do as a communty to stop it. Case in point: Bicknell.
I offer my prayers and thoughts to those that are going to be affected by this. And mark my word if you are living in or around the Knox County area, you will feel the impact of Essex closing whether you feel indirectly or directly. |

If you watch the movie called "Bordertown" it really explains how great NAFTA is. THey pay these women $5 a day to do slave labor, and many of them end up raped and killed on their way home and nobody gives a crap.
My husband is one of the workers in Vincennes and it really sucks that they can just send these jobs to Mexico. Thanks Clinton!!! Most of them make more like $20 bucks an hour and Vincennes officials say they vow to find jobs for our people. Yea, right. There are no jobs here that pay what Essex was paying. So now we have to move, find new jobs, new home and 'hope' we make it. |

Actually I've heard talk around here of a couple that are thinking of coming back now. Saying the taxes situation in Mexico is really not getting much better than it was here. I think Fruit of the Loom was one of them. Just getting too hard for corporations to earn a decent 300% profit margin these days. Shucks.:( |

And correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Mexico have a labor law where the employer has to participate the employees in a percentage of profit sharing?
That's probably really chapping their backsides. |
