What a sorry mother she is. Someone could have abducted him. Yesterday there was a report that a mother had left her 2 year old at a Wal-Mart because she could not take of him. I am not a mother but having common sense is a trait as an adult you should have. My goodness!!

My brother works at a book store at a mall and at least once a week someone leaves their child of the same age, or younger, unattended in his store for a few hours while they go shop - as if the store employees are there to babysit! They are constantly calling mall security because of it. Rarely does anything happen to these people and some parents don't care and keep doing it over and over.
I told him to stop caling mall security and just call the police and social services but he says they'll get in trouble if they don't follow proper procedure. |

What the he** is wrong with people. Have they lost their darn minds. What kind of idiot would leave their child unattened at that age. And by the way, where was the father, why didn't he have the child. My assumption would be that he was with her at work at then nail salon or at the fine dining establishment they own (I'm sure). Just makes you want to smack the crap out of them. UHHHHHHH!!!

Have they not heard of the Adam Walsh story? Or some of the other atrocities people do to children? How stupid - no excuse accepted at all!

The mother (DNA donor) should be prosecuted. I want to see her picture.

not safe. too many weirdos out there eager to pounce on unattended children. please don't do it again. i'm glad the child is ok!

Sadly this happens every single day. Instead of paying for a babysitter the parents will take the kids to Chuck E. Cheese and leave them. The parents get their hand stamped so no other person can take their kid out of there... but there's so many kids running around that noone really notices until the kid says something. Same thing with water parks and even Shopping Malls... it's just sad!
I'm glad this lady got caught and I'm glad the kid is okay. She deserves to sit in jail for a while and hopefully the poor kid will get taken away from her for good! |

I have mixed feelings on this. When I first listened to the headline that a mother leaves her 6-yr-old unattended for 3 hours, yes, I thought what a shame. But when I listened to the whole story, and realized she left him at a library that was a block from her restaurant job, and she left him while she was at work, letting him know that she would return after 3 hours, I felt sorry for her that she was arrested. Now that school is out, she still has to work, and maybe she can't afford a babysitter, and maybe she's afraid to trust one. Maybe her extended family members are involved in crimes (drugs maybe)and she can not trust them with her son. A library is a quiet place of books, story-telling, educational resources, usually filled with the adult workers and other parents with their children. Maybe she felt this was an educational, and the safest place, not too far from her job, and the best place for her child. Enrolling him in a camp or the boys' club may not be a good place for him right now, if he is a child who gets picked on or bullied often. I don't know. There are probably many factors involved here, and I think those factors should be considered.

The bottom line is she the child's parent and therefore is responsible for this child, not the library employees or patrons. |

I have mixed feelings on this too. I grew up a library kid. My sister and I spent hours and hours at the local library in the inner city while my parents worked 7 days a week at their mom & pop.(Stuck on Stupid, you are a disgusting racist.) Bless them, the librarians there did take care of us. They knew we were alone along with other children. Not only did they accept our presence, they set up the film projectors and taught us crafts. They kept us out of trouble and harm's way and developed a life long love of reading and books. Without the kindness of the librarians and the safe, learning rich environment of nothing but books, where would my generation of library kids be today?

After hearing the actual story on the news last night I, too, have mixed feelings. Bottom line is that a 6 year old has no business being left by himself, so ultimately the mother is in the wrong. But then I put myself in the mom's place. From reading the story on here, I guess I assumed that the mom went to work out in Centreville somewhere... I didn't realize that her job was literally 2 blocks away.
Vienna is probably one of the safer areas around with very little crime and few abductions; although it is still dangerous. Wasn't there a girl from Vienna who was abducted just a year or two ago? Does this not frighten some parents? As a parent of a tween, I wouldn't even leave her alone for a minute. I'm not comfortable letting her go to the bathroom in a restaurant by herself cuz you simply never know. I can't imagine leaving my kid alone for a minute, let alone 3 hours, but I guess if you feel that desperate I commend her for leaving her in a relatively safe place such as the library instead of outside in a park in the heat or at Tyson's Corner Mall or something of the sort. I still say this happens far too often in this day and age. I wish parents would wake up and realize that the world isn't nearly as safe as it was just 20 years ago! |

You people that have mixed feelings about this are nuts!! The child in question was six years old. You do not leave six year olds among strangers. And you have to ask yourself how many times has she done something else like this. If you are a parent you are responsible for your child, period!!

Another child born to those incapable of affording the child. Children are expensive and require 24/7 baby sitting and are a parent's liability until 18 years old.
Even that Va. 14 year old shopping alone at Tyson's Corner that reported the recuiter for the Vegas pimp should have been under the care of an adult...until 18 years old. Children are easy marks and there are very bad people who will cause them great harm if given a chance. Children are taken away right from underneath good parent's noses all the time. |

GLOUCESTER (WBZ) ― There's a stunning twist to the sudden rise in teen pregnancies at Gloucester High School. 17 students there are expecting and, according to a published report, most of them became that way on purpose.
Time Magazine is reporting that nearly half of the girls confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. None of the girls is older than 16. Principal Joseph Sullivan said that wasn't all that was shocking. "We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy," he told Time. Last month, two top officials at the high school's health center resigned in a fight over contraceptives distribution. Medical Director Dr. Brian Orr and chief nurse practitioner Kim Daly support confidentially giving contraceptives to students. They were outraged about resistance from Addison Gilbert Hospital, which administers the state public health grant that funds the school clinic. Normally, the school has about four pregnancies per school year. According to Time, school officials started looking into the spike in pregnancies after an unusual number of girls came to the school clinic for pregnancy tests. Some came by several times. "Some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Sullivan told the magazine. The pregnant girls and their parents turned down requests to be interviewed. A recent graduate who had a baby during her freshman year told Time she knows why the girls wanted to get pregnant. "They're so excited to finally have someone to love them unconditionally," Amanda Ireland, 18, said. "I try to explain it's hard to feel loved when an infant is screaming to be fed at 3 a.m." (© MMVIII, CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.) ---------- |

This is so true. |

School officials started looking into the matter as early as October after an unusual number of girls began filing into the school clinic to find out if they were pregnant. By May, several students had returned multiple times to get pregnancy tests, and on hearing the results, "some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Sullivan says. All it took was a few simple questions before nearly half the expecting students, none older than 16, confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. Then the story got worse. "We found out one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless guy," the principal says, shaking his head.

Your story is different. The people in the library were on notice that they were to watch you unlike this woman who just left her child there and assumed someone would watch him. No Excuse will do in my book!!! |
|
You are absolutely right. Stop making excuses for what she did. It only takes a split second for a child to be abducted even if they are in a library and the mother works 2 blocks away. |

Goes to show for 2 things. First, the lack of oversight and responsibility on behalf of the parents raising these children. And second, the true lack of common sense that teenage girls (actually teenagers in general) usually tend to contain. A very scary story indeed. And even more scary that the school states they only average 4 pregnant students per school year. 4 is still 4 too many in my opinion. |

what a shame.....I am glad nothing bad happened to him while he was there...it seems more and more we hear about indecent exposure and molestations in public places such as the library....this mother should be punished for her actions!!!!!!! As a single parent myself...if I have no sitter I call out or I take my baby to work....I would NEVER abandon him ever!
