Name that Party!
A reader alerted me to this article reporting that the Detroit City Council had voted by a margin of 7-1, calling on Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to resign. The reporter did not mention the Mayorís partisan affiliation. Nor did he mention the party of U.S. Rep. John E. Conyers whose wife cast the lone dissenting vote.
Why does the MSM find it so important to list the partisan affiliation of a Republican who gets his hands caught in the cookie jar (or, as in recent scandals) with his pants down, but leaves us to guess when a member of the other party gets in trouble.

Guess itís that when a Democrat does it, itís an isolated occurrence, but when a Republican does it, itís a sign of a trend, proof of that partyís corruption, greed, hypocrisy or some combination thereof.

UPDATE: Seems a Corner reader had a similar thought. In an e-mail to Jonah Goldberg, he wrote:

When conservatives are involved in scandals the scandals are treated as Republican Party scandals. However, Democrats involved in scandals are mere individuals who happen to be involved in scandals.

Sex Scandals: Not Just a Republican Problem
When a reader e-mailed me this morning, claiming,ďsex scandals in the US seems lopsided toward the Republican side of things,Ē I wrote back saying that, in my impression, there were more Democratic than Republican ones. I based my comment not on any scientific survey, but on my own recollection, having followed the news pretty regularly for the past twenty-five years.
I wondered if my friendís impression were based not on his bias (he tends to vote Democratic) but on that of the media, given that they seem to delight more in Republican scandals than Democratic ones, not merely because of the various reportersí left-of-center leanings, but also because of the hypocrisy angle. They want to show that while Republicans may talk family values, they canít walk the walk.

They use this supposed hypocrisy so as to more easily dismiss conservative arguments.

Numerous conservative bloggers, led by Glenn Reynolds (e.g., here), have observed how frequently MSM outlets make sure to reference a politicianís affiliation if heís a Republican caught in a sex scandal, but somehow that doesnít seem necessary to point out when itís a Democrat.

Perhaps, that accounts for my friendís sense that there are more GOP scandals.

Not only that. Republican sexual scandals fit into the MSM theory of sex, inspired by Freud and propagated by pop psychology and pop culture, that only sexually repressed people will seek out sex is secretive and seedy surroundings. Hence, the appeal of the Larry Craig story. A gay man denies his sexuality, thus forces himself to seek trysts in public restrooms.

Yet, if sexual repression were the reason people sought out such secretive sex, what explains former New York Governor Eliot Spitzerís shenanigans? Or Carl McGeeís? McGee, an openly gay man and aide to Massachusettsís Democratic governor, who had married his partner, was arrested for having sex with a teenager in a public steamroom.(Note how the article on McGee doesnít indicate his party affiliation.)

The national media didnít pick up on this story because it didnít fit into their narrative of gay sex scandals.

How the heck does someone come to the conclusion that most pedophiles are republicans? That's as crazy as saying all females have brown hair.

read the article you dope, It was the management of the Border Patrol. I believe the Border Patrol has been arresting 2 million aliens a year, with 10%-25% having criminal records in the US.

Well, technically 100% of the people who broke the law to enter the country illegally should have criminal records. That said I think the number you posted is actually low. here is a quote from Time magazine (not exactly a bastion of the right) in 2004:
"The numbers suggest that tens of thousands of criminals, quite possibly hundreds of thousands, treat the southern border as a revolving door to crimes of opportunity. The situation is so out of control that of the 400,000 illegal aliens who have been ordered to be deported, 80,000 have criminal records - and the agency in charge, the Homeland Security Department, does not have a clue as to the whereabouts of any of them, criminal or noncriminal, including those from countries that support terrorism."
Since Time magazine's numbers reflect 20% we can probably assume the number to be higher.

Wow...do you realize how many "professional" news agencies are on the Republicans side. I don't know what news agencies you are watching, but clearly not the same ones I have been watching for years.

This reminds me a little of the action of Barack Obama not wearing an American Flag pin on his jacket. No one bothered to mention that John McCain never wears a pin.

to your first comment very few, FNC is the only new agency that it can be argued that they lean right.

To the flag pin, McCain's service is well documented, obama, is just a self serving politician, he has no record of anything else.
