I honestly don't care. I would have cared and been thrilled 15 years ago, but now I'm just spiteful.

If it makes economic sense, sure, do it. Don't feel constricted by the culture.

In the article, a parent voices her happiness over having cheaper day care during either end of the school day; but wouldn't she have to pay that and more for babysitting all day Friday?

this is a bad idea. the reason american students are falling behind students in other countries is that they have too much time off. look at the KIPP program, for example, where kids go to school 7 days a week and have shorter summer vacations. they're absolutely above and beyond the average. and most come from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

In the article it said their performances are better, but by a negligible degree. A quality summer vacation is crucial as it allows children to play, experiment, and form as individuals--arguably skills more important than the ability to complete more complex math problems at an earlier age.

Why can't kids get involved with education at home? It's not limited to the classroom...

american kids are lazy and inattentive anyway. there's no fixing that anymore, esp. with all the stupid technology invading every aspect of life. i don't envy future generations...

Why get involved if you can stick them in front of a television? For some families (not all), I think parents are too disengaged from their kids.

Kids need the structure and parents are too distracted to provide it on a daily basis. A four-day week would be awful.

This is a good idea in theory but it will destroy families with two working parents and single-parent families, who will have nobody to watch their young kids on Day 5. This can only work if corporations as a whole embrace a 4-day workweek as their standard also.

Lucky lucky kids. It won't help though. They'll just do more drugs on the day off. At least that's what I would've done.

This is a great idea! Make our kids stupider than they already are.

1. I hope this idea finds its way into the workplace.
2. Reducing the amount of days a child goes to school will not necessarily make them dumber. It's the quality of the education and teaching while they're at school is what's important.
3. This will put a bit of stress on the parents who both have to work. Personally I think they should reduce the actual classroom time to 4 days and then have one day (I suggest Wednesday) for some other skill- or knowledge-building activity, preferably off-site.
4. It's really not the school's responsibility to make up for rotten parents. Maybe this will help to more easily reveal who the rotten parents are.
5. This is a better idea than having them go to school 7 days a week. We don't WORK 7 days a week, why should we ask kids and teachers to do it?

I think that its a good idea because it will save gas and will give you more vacations during the school year even though summer vacation will be shorter.
and today would be the last day of the week !!!!!!!
