Vernona s top chief goes after back pay

Full story: Brattleboro Reformer

The chief of one of Windham County's smallest police departments is filing a complaint against Vernon contending he is long overdue for his overtime pay, but town officials are re-examining the punch-clock. Vernon Police Chief Kevin Turnley has filed paperwork against the town claiming he is not an exempt, but an hourly employee by the terms of his ...

As a Vernon resident I feel the chief should have been let go a long time ago. He doesn't know how to manage and the department in genral have had many issues of not following up on cases etc. The best thing that could happen now is for the selectboard to close the Vernon Police Department and hire the Windham County Sheriffs dept. In the last 2 years Vernon has had one DUI arrest (by a VSP trooper, yet in less then 2 months the Sheriffs dept has been able to get 3. It is very obvious that the VPD has been getting paid to do nothing for far too long.

"One such comment in the survey reads, "Seems like I see a lot more of the Sheriff’s department than I ever did of the police department. So why do we pay our police department?""

The power of observation...geez that looks strange and recording it?

I think Mr. Turnley does a remarkable job. He is very professional and cares about his job and his town. Can anyone work for the town of Vernon, without their character being in question? Instead of trying to search for the things that the cheif is doing wrong, praise him for his hard work and dedication. I frequently see him patroling and always waves at every car. He deserves his overtime pay. A little peice of advice for you Mr. Turnley, leave Vernon's police force and find a job where the townspeople will value your services. No one will ever live up to their standards and they will ruin your career and reputation. You deserve so much more than this kind of mistreatment.

I am sorry but I would rather have a poilce chief that solves crimes then one that waves at me. Having both would be a great thing. Dont get me wrong I like Kevin, we get along very well. That does not make him a good police chief.

He does a great job as a cheif of police. He solves crimes and does his job in a professional manner. If you call him, he responds within minutes. If you think that you can do a better job, take the required training and apply. I can assure you, the townspeople will go against you as well. Instead of sitting in your big house on Pond Road running down Mr. Turnley online, take your concerns to him. He is a very nice man and would probably take your concerns and try to better his department. It is always easier when you are on the outside looking in to see what is wrong with an organization. Let me ask you, what does your present employer think about you. Hopefully they think better than your last employer.

Yea just about as much as Chief Galligher's comments are code words for what is going on with pregnancy rates at HHS.

I would never want to be a police officer personally. I am not running down Chief Turnley personally, as I said I think he is a fine person. I am not sure what house you think I live it, but it is not on Pond road. There are quiet many of us in Vernon that work at Vermont Yankee. As far as my last employer, well I am just a number to the Navy and was dischagred honorably so I am hoping they think fine of me as well.

How many VY employees or their family members are on the Veron selectboard...is VY not paying their fair share. Don’t I remembered their taxes being reduced?

You should stop posting stuff from work and focus on plant procedures and your job. Have you discussed your concerns and feelings with Kevin? Having the Windham Sheriff down in and them making several arrest in a short period is very explainable. All they got to do is sit up the road from Portside for a few hours at 11:00 PM. Kevin probably does not get paid for working at 11:00 PM thus I don't blame him for not having several DUI arrest. Actually it would make better sense for the Sheriff's department to continue with the night details and leave the investigative, crime solving and day time police work stuff to Kevin. Just think how you'd feel if people were commenting on your quality of work in a public forum.

There is the ideal world I am talking about....where we all would be strong enough where we would show all our work and we have the courage to take all comment comers...that public comment good, and especially when critical of you...only makes you a better and stronger person.
