My name is Tomi Pintler and I am a working resident in the city of Liberty Lake who counts on the Spokane Transit to get back and forth to work. Liberty Lake was at one time a small community needing only the one bus (72)for transportation. Soon the town began to grow and it was obvious that a second bus was needed (74). We are now in a situation where that is no longer enough. It's great that we now have a follow-up bus that is available when necessary, but we are now at a new point. The city of Liberty Lake has no weekend bus. The closest bus on the weekends to Liberty Lake on the weekends is in greenacres which is 2 1/2 miles away. Al French agreed that Liberty Lake was developing quickly and that those busses are very full each day. Do you think that all the people on the busses at these times only need to use them during the week? Quite often while I am on the bus you will hear people talking about how badly we need a bus on the weekends; however, no one was actually taking the time to do something about it. I started a bit of a campaign of my own. I talked with the mayor of Libery Lake, the mayor of Spokane Valley, and different people from the STA through E-mails trying to explain why it is we need this. I had heard that there was going to be some changes made, but obviously not in this situation. Liberty Lake is filled with over 6,000 people and growing daily. Most of these people work and I bet it's not just here in Libery Lake where they work. There are also several others who live out of town, but work here in Libery Lake. Believe it or not some of our biggest businesses run during the weekends. I myself work at the Spokane Valley mall which is only 5 miles away from our town. Fortunately I am usually able to arrange some sort of ride when I have to work on the weekends, but I have had to take a cab before when I am unable to. A cab to the mall costs over $15.00. A cab to the nearest bus stop is only 2 1/2 miles away and costs over $10.00. One could walk to the nearest bus on the weekends, but that distance can be rather far to walk, ride a bike or especially if you are disabled and unable to do either one of those and in the winter time it can be even worse. Now, we don't necessarily need for the #72 or #74 bus to come through on the weekends, in fact what is wrong with the Greenacres bus to go just an extra 2 1/2 miles on the weekends to Liberty Lake? They would definately make up in fares for the money it costs for gas. In fact, maybe even if we had that Greenacres bus going through on the weekdays, maybe we wouldn't need that extra bus going through during heavy routes. This is a situation that definately need to be thought about. We need to do something about them soon. Thanks for listening... Tomi Pintler.
