Why is NO ONE reporting that we have 30 days to appeal this crazy decision??????
This decision is reprehensable and an injustice to those who will be most negatively affected by losing the 760 area code. North County is home to many more businesses that will each have to waste thousands and tens of thousands for printing. The Imperial valley gave the weak excuse reported by the Desert Local News
"Residents of Imperial Valley cities (Brawley, Imperial, El Centro) objected to having to lose their existing 760 area code because it “identifies Imperial County”.
GET OVER IT!!!
Think of the cost of not doing an overlay plan! You tell me to "Think Green?" Think of the waste and polution. We are going to reprint all telephone related material in North County causing greater polution and we are going to use more paper for the new stuff and throw away all the rest. Who is thinking at the CPUC? Don't bother me anymore about recycling a paper bag.
California is talking out of two sides of their political mouths and no one is using their brain!

Stuff happens. I dont like it but there is not much that can be done about it. We will be running out of available telephone numbers in the 760 area code shortly. Imperial Valley is much less densly populated along with most other areas of the 760 area code district and could remain 760 with little impact.
My cell phone is on a prepaid plan.(I have had it for 5 years now and it works for me) I am almost certain I will lose even the last 7 digits of my number. Most people will simply need to inform friends and family (if they cant figure it out on their own) to dial 442 vs 760 like what was done with 909 vs 951. However I was lucky enough to find an available number that alphabetically corresponded with a phrase that identifies me. I am not sure that will be possible with the 442. I am sure I'll get over it.
I completely sympathsize with Jan M.s point the same thing happens when a streets name is changed to a name of an historical figure to make a few people happy.
What the real problem is there are a limited amount of number combinations available. Many phone numbers are stale because bills are not paid. Too many cell phones out there. It is not unusual for a family to have 10 phone numbers under one roof.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Five years down the road look forward to 13 digit numbers.

Why not do what they do on the east coast? Give new subscribers the new area code, but allow existing users to keep the 760.

The environmental and fiscal impact of changing north county's area code makes that the much simpler course of action. If we're going to have 3 different area codes in southern california the idea of dialing 442-xxx-xxxx or 760-xxx-xxxx to call my neighbor is no where near as inconvenient.

Does anyone know how to appeal the decision? Is it a vote or petition? Although I admire the direct approach, I dont think "f*ck 442" will work.

Just switch your carrier to Vonage, or some other Internet telephony service. You never change your phone number when you move (unless you want to). It has no geographic binding like the regular telcos.
