Where is the leadership?
http://www.timesheraldonline.com/letters/ci_2... The Saturday afternoon shoot-out -- during a children's party -- is just another frustrating incident in the ongoing saga of "Why Doesn't the Mayor Do Something?" There are so many ways to curb this kind of behavior/violence -- and all the City of Vallejo and the Section 8 landlords do is use the solution of last resort -- the Vallejo Police Department and American Canyon Police Department -- to solve the most immediate problems. This isn't even a question of money anymore. This is about the will of the city council, the mayor, the faith-based community, the schools, the landlords and homeowners to fix this. In this particular instance, the children at this party now have a "new" normal and here we go with a new generation thinking guns and gangs are acceptable. Months ago the city received several security cameras to be placed in various "high crime" areas of the city. NONE were placed in the Country Club Crest area, where the violence erupted (again) late Saturday afternoon. It would take just two cameras -- one on Taper and one on Gateway -- to view 90 percent of the traffic coming into and out of the Crest. A single "shot-spotter" placed in the same area would quickly alert authorities to even a single gun shot. Who lives in these homes? Are they homeowners or renters? If they are renters, does the city contact the landlords to clean up the location? What about Child Protective Services? If children are living in a home with gang activity and weapons, isn't that something that should be investigated? Really, Vallejo, this is not rocket science. Nor does it take ANOTHER city council committee to look into the situation. What we have here is analysis paralysis -- while a new generation of thugs is born in the Crest. "Leadership"; where are the flamethrowers? You can't lead or fix Stupid, it's genetics.

Cathy, there's been a white police camera on the pole at the corner of Gateway and Griffin in The Crest, in plain view for everybody to see. Been there for months now, but obviously didn't help deter the shootout. That part of The Crest, next to the Fairground Plaza, has been the primary trouble spot for decades, ever since Mac Dre and the Romper Room Gang. Also where Officer Capoot was killed. City of Vallejo has done everything in the past -- redevelopment, VPD substation in Fairgrounds Plaza -- to no avail. It seems that some mysterious force has an interest in not seeing this neighborhood develop properly. It's more than obvious that COV isn't willing or able to take on that part of The Crest in a meaningful way.
