I worked with Julie at VP for over ten years. She is one of the most professional teachers I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. This incident took place in a small area of the library used for in school suspension (ISS). I was a RSP spec ed teacher at this school for 15 years. It is next to impossible to effect meaningful discipline for these students because it is considered a change of placement and a violation of the "free and appropriate education" guaranteed all students. You have NO idea how much work went into just getting this kid suspended for 5 days. What is the answer? A major change in thinking is needed, followed by rational legislation allowing educators to realistically respond. Laws intended to protect students and insure their educational rights have hamstrung educators all across this country. Incidents such as this one, while less serious, go on continuously, and I'm here to tell you from personal experience, there will be no diminishing of frequency any time soon. I wish you the best Julie, and I'm so sorry you were victimized not only by this little puke but by the people at the school you have worked so diligently with these many years.

So sad that a special ed classification is used as an excuse for bad conduct. It may be a reason, but IS NOT and excuse. Special Ed stuents need to be held accountable.
