How long can the Utica OD last?

It appears that all print newspapers are in decline. It is only a matter of time until many (including the OD) either will need to reinvent themselves or will be a thing of the past. Consolidation to a newspaper group (similar to USA today model) is inevitable. These charts show the decline of the newspaper industry overall:

The OD stopped being a Newspaper two or three years ago. Its all cupcakes and old lady bake sales now.
The OD cheer leads while the City falls into ruin and never reports on: New Hartford and friends and family of the staff (ie Linda Romano and her real estate deals and the libary shenanagans).

The OD stopped being a real newspaper right around the same time Donna Donovan walked in the door.

What you need to do to destroy the OD is to start and active campaign against her advertisers. Every day, post the names of the businesses that are advertising in the OD and we will all call them all day long and ask them to stop paying into the newspaper that has enabled the total destruction of this city by the friends Donna coddled and never asked a folllow-up question for decades.

All you have to do is get the word out that a group is POd at the OD for ignoring the obvious and giving us rosey glasses, bake sale notices and ridiculous articles like that one they got that idiot to write as if it was some retort to the USA today article and photos.

Do it. Lots of people on topix know the real deal with the OD and you just post asking people to call these companies and ask them over and over to stop paying the woman who benefits herself on all these losers killing our city. We can post the names of the businesses daily on here asking for help dissuading the advertisers from spending on killing us and continuing the path that Donna Donovan has had us on to her smug benefit for decades. Also, tell the advertisers you will frequent them AND DO IT if they stop buying space in her tampon. I will do my part. This has shut down entire radio stations and the OD is on it's last legs and not very deep so now could be the time to begin!

If the OD did actual journalism (not just news reporting) they would sell by the dozen, what with all the corruption and back room deals in this city.

It is totally true that newspapers and print media is in decline. That is not the issue here with the OD. There are plenty of other newspapers that print news on a daily basis. Take the nearby Syracuse Post-Standard for example. It is not the same as the paper it was a few years ago. It is smaller. There is less to it. However, the PS still contains news. It contains full length articles and has enough information to make it worth paying for. The OD, on the other hand, contains very little of what people buy a newspaper for. All the articles are very short and devoid of details. AP articles are edited to less than half their original content. Even Dear Abby is half of what it should be! Instead of news about what is happening in this community, the OD fills its few pages with useless fluff peices that are of little interest. Instead of reporting on the problems and dificulties Utica faces, we get touch feely articles about how wonderful life in Utopia/Utica is. Where is the reality? Even Watertown, a city smaller than Utica, has a real newspaper.

The OD is getting so desperate for news, they have to find news outside our area to fill the pages. Their reporters can't find anything newsworthy anymore. Might as well shut the doors and get out of business.

How's this for the OD. Donna Donovan appeared in 4 out of 5 photos on their website for the Teen All Stars program on March 31st. In the newspaper she appeared in 2 out of 3 in the actual newsprint. Isn't this awards ceremony about the Teen All Stars themselves? Donna, quit hogging the photos instead of the students themselves. It is about them not you getting your picture printed over and over again. All of the photos on the website also stated that she in the president and publisher of the OD. That's 4 times in 5 photos. Even your fluff editor appeared in these photos. Gosh, give us a break we know who you are!!!!!!!

I am a parent of a high school student in New York Mills. With regard to the OD's teen all stars, I think it is ethically wrong to pick a teen all star that is the daughter of an employee. The newspapers' editorial board would be the first to criticize the local tv station if they did something similar. Shame on the Observer Disgrace.

I agree with New York Mills, and so do many of the people who work here. What about DDs speech every year encouraging the teen all stars to get an education and return to this area. Her sons both left the area after graduating from college.

It is obvious to me that the reason a daughter of an OD employee was picked is because.......she is a daughter of an OD employee!
