Has anyone had any experiences with KO with their new area/department that takes over cases from CPS? I know someone, let's call her "Sue", who has temp custody of a child who has been abused/neglected all her life by her mother who is a life long alcoholic and drug abuser. It was explained to Sue by KO that their "job" and goal was family reunification, and that they were obligated, by law, to reunite the "family"! There are maybe some cases where putting the family back together may be the right thing to do, but many times keeping the family together is a much worse option. The mother in this case has 5 children ranging in ages 5-21 and all have suffered horrendously in her care. They have been removed from the home multiple times only to be placed back with the mother. The child that Sue has custody of is a teenager who has no desire to have any contact with her mother at this point. Sue has her in therapy and hopefully one day the child will be able to heal and learn about setting boundaries, etc...and maybe one day she may want to have communication with her mother. From what I know thus far, it appears all the rights lie with the mother and the children have no rights. KO, nor CPS seem to have any of these childrens "best interest" in mind. How can anyone think that "family reunification" with this mother is anything less than insanity!!!

Of note, you can't find any information on the KO website about this "new department". Would love to know where I could view their Charter or Mission Statement!

Would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has had any experiences with KO.

Unfortunately, family reunification has been a social services goal for many years. And it doesn't seem as if family court ever takes the wishes of the kid into consideration. Some people need their children taken away forever, they are hopeless.

I do not often stick up for KO employees but in this case it sounds like the caseworker is just doing their job, being professional and keeping their personal feelings and opinions to themselves. The issue is the law and the law is in favor of every effort possible to reunify the family and it takes a lot to legally justify taking away parental rights. If you or your friend have an issue it is State lawmakers you need to complain to the courts and everyone beneath them are only following the laws as written.

On my pesonal axperence and opinion social services are way to powerfull you do not see them taking a child from a poor family or a family on welfare thay cannot make any money that way thay figure the kids will become adults sooner or later if lhay live that long then the soon to be adults will be in the prison system anyway

I have dealt with KO . There are a few staff/providers I have come into contact with who are disrespectful, rude, argumentative- especially if you question their lack of knowledge, do things beyond their scope of duties- and may I say bill KO for their time then therefore are reimbursed by the County, cover their azzes when they see abuse and do NOT report it (playing stupid is a prize trademark of some of the providers). Lets see, if you verbally state your dismay to them, then their is no record of the conversation and the stupid act continues. It is surprising for all their education, training, prior jobs, and so forth, they function as well as a box of rocks.

I agree that it is the Law that has to change. It is definitely not child friendly. I have uncovered so much researching what a mess the "CPS" system is. Child abuse/neglect in Oneida county alone is basically epidemic. This is the criteria caseworkers follow: If they do not personally view any abuse/neglect and when they ask the child if they are being abused and the child says no, then they have done their job. That is basically the extent of their investigation. I was told directly by a CPS worker that if the child says they are fine, then they have to go with that! Unreal! Children are manipulated with fear and threatened by the abusive parents. If they talk then they'll be sorry, or are told that if they talk one of their siblings will be sorry, etc... Dont these caseworkers realize this??!! Why isn't more being done?? So many cases where the children should be removed from the home but are not and what it comes down to is the all mighty dollar! It costs the county money to put a child in foster care, which is the main reason they are all about "reunification." If you keep the kid in the home, less money the county has to spend. Enough people have to start to care, stop being a part of this apathetic city, make a phone call, do something, etc....! Children are being scarred for life, livig in deplorable conditions not fit for a dog and even dying every day, yes right here where we live. It is nothing short of a tragedy that we live in this country and this goes on!!

Bob Roberts Joe DePaul and the Lojewski family are continuing to scam the taxpayers out of a lot of money. Ask why the friends get all the lucrative case assignments...ask why the whole Palmeiri clan works there...Must suck to have to work on your knees all day.

you know of corruption, you should put it in a letter (even if it is anonymous) and send it to the county as well as the state for investigation. You are aiding in the corruption if you don't report what you know.
