A crystal dome for U. of C.'s tomes
At the University of Chicago , where the student hangout is the library and a prize is awarded annually for undergraduate book collecting, officials are expected to announce Monday plans to build another ...

This library would best fit for all to use in the neighborhood and surrounding areas.

What will happen to the Henry Moore "Nuclear Energy" sculpture?

I don't think the library will extend that far west. Either that or it will actually be underneath the sculpture. |

I don't think an Underground library is so much an "outside the box" idea, as opposed to copying what the University of Illinois did to prevent shaded corn.

Why don't they try to lower tuition first. Higher education tuition has gotten ridiculous.
It is now a privilege for the elite. |

What's the point of having a great library if you get shot on the way home?

I applaud the U of C faculty for the decision to keep the collections on campus and browsable. Work between disciplines is hard enough without having to go off-campus to access somebody else's literature.

Great to have an article with a poll asking you to rate the design of something ... then neglect to include a photo of what you're critiquing ...

"Ondafarm" what about the discipline of not taxing the poor, and middle class to build crystal palaces for the elite.

U of C is one of the most important private institutions in the city, state, country and world. Most of the these posts fail to realize that. Terrific that Go U of C is getting a new library. The school is worthy of support.

Clarence: the article "leaves out" the tax info because the project is likely to be funded by private donations. Elite or no, U of C has some very well-heeled alumni. |

It's easy to think outside the box to build a non-browsing library for 80 million dollars. I hope they figured in the cost of running sump pumps continuously for their underground facility!

Posters who have too much envy of those with decent educations and/or of how PRIVATE institutions spend their money should...take a deep breath before spewing their envy on topics they know little of.
The U of C should do whatever they want with THEIR money. Sheesh; it's not like they've proposed tearing down perfectly good/useful buildings built at the public's expense {Blago and NIU}. It's not like they've proposed any use of tax-payers' monies. No, let the U of C do as they wish, since they'll stand or fall by their own decisions. One has to ask what causes so much consternation in some posters about a provate university building a library? Pretty sick-o stuff being posted here. As an aside, I didn't attend the U of C, but, my graduate school is an institution that keeps a copy of every book ever published {that they can get their hands on}. Whadya want 'em to with the books, burn 'em? Maybe posters to this piece should spend more time reading books than bashing those who would preserve, provide and cherish 'em! |
Since the U of C is a PRIVATE institution, tax dollars don't come into this project. And this library will be situated south of the monument-- where the tennis courts are now. |

The university pays for those special CTA buses. Exactly how is "joe blow" picking up the tab on this project? |
|
|
I just hope that it's bulletproof.

Wow. Didn't get accepted, huh? Sorry 'bout that. Sour grapes are rather...sour. Good on U of C - cool stuff. And since this is a PRIVATE institution, no one need fear having any tax dollars going toward this project. |

Ah yes, no article about the U of C is complete without mentioning how nerdy the students are.(Reporters, this gets really, really stale.)
I'd like the design better if the dome weren't so high. If most of the library will be underground, why does the dome need to be nearly as tall as Regenstein? I'm all in favor of keeping all of U of C's books on campus, but the campus is getting really cramped. It was horrible the way they shoehorned those ugly boxy dorms right behind Regenstein (which got built because Rafael Vinoly's business school necessitated razing some older dorms). The block that Regeinstein and the ugly boxy dorms are on, and soon Jahn's glass dome, will seem disastrously cluttered. It's too bad. |
