When will the authorities wake up on train horn thefts. Most enthusiasts and collectors are not the ones to climb on top of a privately owned locomotive without the owner's permission.
There is a sizable community of collectors out there, most of us buy from other collectors, horn manufacturers, railroads, locomotive salvagers or locomotive parts dealers. Every time a horn get reported stolen the word goes out though the collector community with as full of a description as possible, of what was stolen (manufacturer, model, current paint color, any additional markings, etc...), what it came off of and from who it was stolen from. This is done to protect the community, so that if a horn is spotted they don't accidentally buy a hot horn, and so that a report can be filed with the correct authorities. The ones who tend to steal the horns are usually those idiots who refer to themselves as hornblasters, search the web for that term and you will see what I am referring to. These people get their thrills from blowing overly loud horns, sometimes multiple locomotive horn assemblies at the same time, to purposefully scare pedestrians and other drivers. |

This really makes me mad. People that steal things like this give a bad name and reputation to honest railfans and horn collectors.
