Most of the quotes against Topix made in this article were spoken by Rev. Malonee from Second Baptist Church. I imagine his fury was a result of a previous Topix thread entitled, "Cheaters at Second Baptist Church", or something to that effect. If memory serves, after several pages of posts were made, a female member of his family was spoken of in a derogatory way. Because of his statue in the community, the county commission probably feels they should let him vent, then move on.

You can enter the zip code of any community in the nation and you will probably see similarly offensive threads. This does not happen exclusively in Union City or Obion County. Offensive or not, ultimately it is free speech. The Supreme Court recently ruled the Westboro Baptist Church (how ironic) could spout vile comments and put up offensive signs at funerals of fallen servicemen and women. I don't see anything on Topix that rises to the benchmark of what Westboro Baptist Church is doing.

We the people will exchange information when we want and with whom we want.

The newspapers are no longer delivering timely news, or asking tough questions. TV news is a joke, and polititians have come up with ingenious ways to cut deals outside the light of public scrutiny.

Like the back room deal to give the ethenol plant a big discount on property taxes. Screw me and you. No one has yet to explain that deal to the taxpayers and business people who play by the rules.

So we the people are back, you the government work for us, and if I were you I'd worry about getting re-elected. If you discuss topix again instead of doing the peoples business, you will be the biggest fools in Tennessee.

Well, there were many rude, hateful, & possibly untrue things posted in the thread about 2nd. I don't blame him for being upset about it. But there are, every now and then, threads that are helpful here. Like, "have you eaten at X, how is it?" or "where can I find someone to fix Y appliance?" Then there's political debate those do get long. And society commentary (dress code, teen pregnancy, sports). It's not all bad, but I do acknowledge that there are the bad posts.

I was surprised no one had brought this up yet, and I completely agree.

Horrible people can come, and picket the funeral of a service man or woman, but now the county is suddenly worried about Topix.

I have been to a military funeral that Westboro attended, and it was the most sickening thing I have ever witnessed. People forget that just 4 1/2 years ago we lost one of our own in Iraq when the Union City Unit went, and yes, Westboro protested his funeral.

Why can our county not find a way to keep these people out of our town, or at least away from the families, but they feel the need to address Topix.com ? It's a smack in the face that a trashy website takes priority over other important issues.

Every week in the local paper you will find the following gossip:

A family is torn apart by molestation, names and addresses are thrown out to the public to further embarrass family and friends.

A mother is arrested for DUI, her story is published for all, including her children, to read.

A couple goes through divorce, their names published in the records section for curious readers to view.

A family loses their home to foreclosure, the sale is advertised in the classifieds for all to come and see.

A businessman purchases a property for future expansion, all competitors discover it in the land transfer records on Wednesday.

Our Presidents, Governors, and other leaders are made fun of in cartoons and editorials.

What do the local churches do about it? They give the newspapers money to advertise their services in the hopes of winning souls. The same reason they record a church service and run it on Charter Cable.

Let me make a suggestion, if you want to help the sinners, go where the sinners are. Today's generation, future Christians if you will, are on the web.

The web is an alley, a bar, a cathouse, a congregation. Focus on the sinner not the sin.

I'm pretty much in agreement but just want to add that some gossip is in the paper purely for the sake of gossip and other "gossip" is required to be posted by law.

For example, TN state law states:
A notice of sale must be published at least three (3) different times in a newspaper published in the county where the sale is to be made, with the first publication appearing at least twenty (20) days prior to the sale.
Unless otherwise ordered, if no newspaper is published in said county, the notice of sale must be posted at least thirty (30) days in advance of the sale in at least five (5) public places within the county. At least one of these notices must be placed at the courthouse door and another in the neighborhood of the property itself.

Back to the topic at hand, there are no less than a million things more important to be discussed by the commission than this website, and I say this partly because I just don't see what they can do about it? Yes, aside from the informative/thought-provoking/ harmless content, there are some crazy, vicious and/or untrue things being said on this website, but like others have said, it's a nationwide site and those types of posts are everywhere. I'm guessing if something could have been done about it, it would have been done well before now, right?

Thanks to Danny Jowers for giving this site so much publicity. What a moron. The Obion County Commissioners need to be focusing on the demise of Obion County instead of this little site. Seems to me they are spending too much time on here and not enough on what they were elected to do! Is it not a conflict of interest to be chairman of the budget committee and be a county employee head? I guess that allows you to manipulate your budget and put money in your pocket.
