Obion County Commission To Address Topix. Bring Back The Stone Age.

Topix was among the topics Monday for the Obion County Budget Committee. The committee voted to allow the Obion County Commission to consider a proposed resolution in opposition to the Topix website when the full commission meets March 21.

"It is a coward who cannot sign his name to something" Budget Committee Chairman Danny Jowers said.

I totally agree with papaman, WTG! If you don't agree with the article, comment, topic, etc. then DON'T read it! Prior to the Cold War paranoia of the mid-20th century, anonymous Letters To The Editor were common; in fact, the right to write anonymously was central to the free-press/free-speech movement (as in the 1735 trial against John Peter Zenger, which started with an anonymous essay).

By the 1970s, editors had developed strong negative attitudes toward anonymous letters, and by the end of the 20th century, about 94 percent of newspapers automatically rejected anonymous LTEs.

Some newspapers in the 1980s and ‘90s created special anonymous opinion forums that allowed people to either record short verbal opinions via telephone (which were then transcribed and published) or send letters that were either unsigned or where the author used a pseudonym.

Although many journalists derided the anonymous call-in forums as unethical (for instance, someone could make an unfounded opinion without worry of the consequences or having to back the comment up with hard facts), defenders argued that such forums upheld the free-press tradition of vigorous, uninhibited debate similar to that found in earlier newspapers.

I guess one of the commissioners must have gotten his/her toes stepped on by a post on TOPIX.

I don't agree with everything or everyone on TOPIX, but I do respect Freedom of Speech.

I don't particuarly appreciate posts made by ICU, but I respect his freedom to express his/her opinion.

I agree that there is a fine line between Freedom or Speech and Libel, but this line is decided by the Court System.

Since OC is now going to be know for censorship, which books are we going to start burning?

This is the internet age! I agree that some post on Topix contain demeaning comments toward some people and some are factual information. Gossip and slander are two different things. Gossip has been around for millions of years. The new testament refers to it in the churches, admonishes those who practice it to refrain from idle gossip. It still happens in society, as people live and breathe, many seem to get their kicks from talking about others to others. Now it is prevalent in the internet age to post gossip on forums and chat rooms. It goes beyond the pale, when it becomes slander or becomes damaging to peoples character . I read today's Messenger, and I had to laugh when it stated that post on Topix could cause industry to choose not to locate in Obion Co., tourist not to come here, and people not to locate here. That was unbelievable! I look at this site everyday and have not seen anything posted that would cause these things to occur.

Did you know that Charter Cable TV offers hard core porn for purchase in our area? Sexual intercourse for any child to watch if they can push a button?

Did you know that a large number of Senior Citizens are stealing drugs from Tenn Care and selling them to people who sell them to kids?

Did you know that Tennessee has the 5th highest rate of adult obesity at 27.8 percent and the 4th highest rate of overweight youths (ages 10-17) at 20 percent in the nation, according to a report by Trust for America's Health (TFAH). Death is the final answer?

Did you know that the number of fatherless children in Obion County is at an all time high? Hurting schools, neighborhoods and ruining lives?

And you go to the County Commission to start a movement against a website where only words are used to inflict occasional pain?

Praise the Lord and pass the chicken, who's on stage next? See ya in church.

Believer in a magical mystical being, go back to my first comment. That is word for word or first amendment. It protects or freedom of speech and your freedom of religion. I am not sure what all your rantings had to do with this discussion, but there are bad things everywhere. That does not change the fact we have those freedoms. By the way the US government and private organizations are working on ways to censor or freedom of speech right now, maybe your religion is next.

Papaman- I believe the poster was saying that there are plenty of other things to worry about besides Topix. Didn't take much to understand that.

You left out pothole filled roads, illegal speed traps with crooked officers signing tickets they never gave in person, bad air quality from a mountain of garbage on one end of town and a factory at the other end of town cooking road kill, stinking up the whole county. Also, a county high school filled with pregnant sluts. Yep, the truth hurts but better to know ahead of time. Why would anyone want to start a business or move a factory here? I wouldn't. Just sayin.

I can assure the good people of Obion County that the last thing we want showing up on the agenda of the County Commission is this terd. I think we can magically make it disappear as I can't imagine any commissioner wanting to stoop low enough to discuss this. Except one.

health quest is the land of the free and free dress.lol Does this county not have better or more important things to talk about than topix? If you want to look at people that think and are beautiful go to health quest. The epuipment is a joke.
