Sometimes its nice to just get away from here for a day and go have some fun, do some shopping, and eat someplace you don't normally have.

But everyone says that this is the greatest place in the world. Why would anyone want to leave...other than me?

now right there is an example of a bad attitude that keeps people from liking you, need to try a little harder to be happy. should be content with what you have! plus you need to be a little careful about saying stuff like that, have you not seen how easily life is taken away, just in the last few months? 8 kids alone, not counting adults just since march

Just hope to heck it doesn't happen unless you want to see all your other businesses close. After they close WM will deteriorate into a leech on the community. Be careful what you hope for.

Ok I include the boy from Johnson, there's the 4 girls, next was a baby, then the 18 yr old from johnson, then shynia and then a couple weeks ago was the little one who choked on a grape. maybe I don't have them in the right order but there's at least 8 that I can think of. life is too precious!

I agree, Walmart's already taken our downtown, we didn't need it here to do that, everyone drives to it. So if everyone's driving there, why not bring it here?

I have been reading your posts. We recently bought a house in the country close to Ulysses. I really like it here. I can offer alittle insight into the walmart story. My mom is an assistant manager back home. First and foremost you should read up alittle on how much money from taxes and utility bills it normally brings into a community. The numbers are mind blowing! Not to mention the options of getting other FOOD joints into your town (my favorite!) As for the smaller businesses, it will make them honest! The older people are going to continue to go to the home town grocery stores. Personally I like Alco. They have alot of things that walmart doesn't provide. I know that some businesses will take a hit, but also, how much will they benefit from the added visitors to town looking for specialty items. I have 4 kids, and the drive to go to Garden to shop ends up being an all day event! I think it will be a blessing in disguise. If you go to walmart.com and check out the corperate site, it also explains the money they give to local events!
And the construction, there is just 1 company that does all the construction. They only have so many crews. So, that is why the progress is so slow going. But, my mom says from the first ground breaking to the doors opening is usually less than 8 months! You could wait that long or longer to get a new house built! Look how fast the Sam's went in.
I'm not here to be an expert or anything, I just thought I would share a little inside info.
Oh, and if you look on Google Earth @ Ulysses and type in walmart site, it will show the place give or take 1 mile. That is according to my mom! That to me is a positive.

I really don't think that it will hurt businesses any more than it does now. People who shop Walmart already drive there. Russ' will still get the meat business that they have now. I for one will only buy meat at Russ'. Be honest and tell how many people you see in Garden City, Dodge City or Liberal Walmarts that are from Ulysses. Especially Garden City, every where you go on Saturdays you run into half the town of Ulysses over there in home depot, walmart and the eating establishments even with the gas prices. Why don't we try to keep that money in our town instead of over there? I for one think it's a great idea to have a Walmart. At least then we won't HAVE to drive over there to get what is NOT sold here.
very true you cant find jack in this town and if you do its very expensive

It is almost cheeper to go to garden and shop for things, even with the gas, than to shop here.

They will not build in Ulysses.
Town does not have the population for one thing. You have to have a large enough town to get all the employees they need.
What is wrong with you people believing something like this.
Look at all the towns around you that do have a Wal-Mart. Just to name a few Garden City, Dodge City, Guymon, and Lamar. All of those towns have over twice the population of Ulysses.
Name me one just ONE town the size of Ulysses that has a Wal-mart.

Oh wait! Canadian, Texas closed their Wal-Mart in 2004.

From what I read "after ten butchers in Texas voted to unionize their ... Wal-Mart closed a profitable Canadian store in 2004 after employees chose union representation
