I was headed south right after the accident happened. CHP, ambulances, other vehicles were racing past me and then I saw the Cal Star copter flying south in the same direction. It felt like something out of a movie scene with the sirens/lights of the cruisers speeding towards the grade and the chopper in the sky above and to the left charging towards the horizon at low altitude. When I came to the overpass, cones were blocking the freeway and directing cars to the exit. As I pulled to the right, I asked a CHP officer if traffic was still being allowed to continue south and he said yes. Well...once on the overpass cars were bumper to bumper and going nowhere. People were out of their cars with binoculars and/or cameras looking south towards the police vehicles, tow trucks, ambulances, wrecked cars and the helicopter in the middle of the freeway with it's blades spinning. At that point traffic wasn't slowed but it was actually at a dead stop on the ramp and overpass as more vehicles began stacking up below, behind the accident. Traffic in the south bound lane and I think northbound too for awhile, was shutdown for at least 40-60 minutes. I ended up back tracking into town and took Talmage to the East Side...oh, excuse me, the Old River Road in order to head south around the accident and into Hopland. Considering the response and condition of the vehicles, I was happily surprised to read that no one was killed.

It's amazing how many people will speed up to jockey for position at 70 MPH on that last 1/4 mile of road before it drops down to a one lane in each direction at 55 MPH

I was on my way home around the same time and was there before any CHP, Ambulances or anything arrived. I had pulled over to the side to see if I could help but there were a lot of people already helping being there was just getting in the way. Someone else cleared the debris to allow the cars to drive through until help arrived. I saw the helicopter right after I had left the scene. It was pretty scary scenario.

No, we're not ALL guilty of it but I can identify the most common offenders. Women, and you know it.

Thanks, I was headed to my Grandma's 90th B-day party at the River Rock Casino and was already late when the traffic came to a stop...I was certainly concerned for the people in the accident but I also needed to get to see my family...when I got home and read the article in the UDJ...I thought it was inaccurate and really didn't do justice to the magnitude of the situation. I'm no Tommy Wayne Kramer but I try...:)

Just wanted to let you know that a really wonderful woman did die in that crash. I heard this from another, so i can't confirm, but I am pretty certain it's true and happened on the air lift to Santa Rosa. It's a real shame and I am so sorry for the loss of such a caring woman.

really?? your harilous. i have stoped and watched.. and its equal. i would bet anything on it cus i have witnessed it. i have seen professionals, drivers, police (cus they're allowed) attorneys, etc. both women and men equally. now you may be right on that its most common for a women to put make up on while driving.. that could be very accurate (excluding SF) but as for UKIAH as a whole. its 50/50. dont believe go check Cell phone ticket list.. 2 of my guy acquintances have recieved tickets this year. so the next time your parked.. seriously somewhere down town is a good spot. watch every driver go by.. its pretty sad how many people will be either texting or talking on their cell phone and it will be women and MEN>
