Would love Costco in Ukiah

Full story: The Ukiah Daily Journal

We would love to have a Costco in Ukiah! Currently, we travel from the North Coast of Mendocino County to Santa Rosa twice a month to shop at the closest Costco.

My wife and I are with you 100% on this.
Same thing... we shop local when we can, but do go to Costco and Target a lot. We end up going for the day, and eating down there. So our local food places would benefit greatly from this. Would love for our local county to get the property tax and sales tax revenue instead of Santa Rosa.
Our county needs this.

frankly i would be interested in seeing a Costco here as well; just not at the Masonite site.

however, the repeated assumption that local eateries would benefit seems unlikely to me. out-of-area travellers shopping at Costco are not necessarily going to explore the rest of Ukiah any more than most people going to Santa Rosa to shop go much further than Santa Rosa Ave. the eateries that will benefit are the ones that will be clustered around Costco; most likely other chain restaurants renting from DDR and sending their money off to corporate headquarters.

Costco and Target have not said they will come to Ukiah.

The rumor is just that. Even DDR admits they have no commitments from anyone.

You are exactly right. The people who say other local business would benefit are selling a bill of goods. It is one of the many small lies that DDR is using to fool people into supported the rezoning, and to doing so without the environmental review that every other project is expected to follow.

I respectfully disagree. Not with your opinion about where you would eat... but with your assumption that everyone is like you. One can only eat at Applebees so many times. When my wife and I go to SR to shop, be it at Costco, Macy's or the like... we often go into town to eat at some of the awesome places that are small an locally owned. In fact we often stop in Healdsburg and eat at the many places on the DOWN TOWN SQUARE... so the people that think Down Town will be killed is thinking in a bubble of their own ideals. If Ukiah were to get on the ball with the Down Town... and used this Masonite Development to their advantage... the would attract a larger crowd. Even the places in Willits... as the Fort Bragg crowd shopped at Costco in Ukiah... returning home, stopping for dinner there at Gribaldo's or the Thistle... or some new place that opens up because of the new opportunities.

Costco and Wal-mart are two different things. Costco has a more upscale target market, and will be a big draw to Ukiah. That in turn will benefit other locally owned businesses.... IF, and only if... they adapt their business models to fit the new markets. But that's the same with anything... adapt and survive. It's the responsibility of the business owner to attract and retain customers... it's not the county or the City's responsibility to protect them. Many of the businesses in town are dying because of their own business plan... not outside influences.

The locally owned places in town... food, shops etc... can benefit greatly by the increased opportunities that a new development and a Costco would bring... If they adapt and market themselves properly... Good food, good service, word of mouth... brings in repeat customers.

Which EIR would that be? The General plan that has been in the works for a decade now? Of maybe the Ukiah Valley Area Plan EIR.... that one's been going on for years too. the last general plan is from 1981. Things have changed, and our BOS have stalled this stuff for years. countless man hours and tax payer dollars later and we still don't have an updated General Plan or UVAP. The won't approve anything regarding rezoning until the the GP and UVAP are completed. When will that be? They can't give you a date, because they have not completed the studies yet. Meanwhile how is the economic outlook of this county?

DDR is not the problem here... the BOS is the problem. How long does it take to do a study and decide what zones need to be changed for future use? We keep electing new boards who come in with political agendas that send the plans back to staff to modify to fit their agenda... further stalling the process. Meanwhile, property owners wait... money that could be coming to the county is lost, people don't have jobs etc... Stop blaming DDR and look at your leaders. Demand more of them.

The County has had multiple opportunities to step up over the past decade and even longer.... the fact they can't make up their minds is hurting the people of this county. Wake up BOS.

By the way...same for the City. Ask them how long they have been talking to Costco about coming here. They tried negotiating for years and we don't have a Costco. It's not happening at the Airport site... thank God. that place is a traffic nightmare already.

Sure, I'll shop at Costco if they build one in Ukiah.

I'll just take the $$ I'm currently spending at Raleys and Safeway and WalMart and spend it there! I anticipate saving at least 10% overall ... and paying 10% less on sales taxes!

Wow. This is just such a winning idea for Mendocino County. 10%(or MORE) in budget reductions. Why didn't we all think of this sooner?

Your missing the point. Many of us are already shopping at Costco in SR. It won't take anything away from our local stores. It's a win win situation. We won't have to travel out of town and our area will reap the tax advantage.

Mr and Mrs Wolfe,
Why Ukiah? Why don't you lobby for you precious CostCo to be built in Manchester, Ft. Bragg or anywhere else on the coast? Seems it would serve your interests better. Less gas, travel,time,etc.. Or is that to close to your paradise for comfort?

Guess what Red. Ukiah is the county seat. It is the county's urban center. It is on hwy 101 and nobody from Lake County drives through FB to get to it. Costco doesn't belong anywhere in this county but Ukiah and at the Masonite site.

Oh I almost forgot the most important point. Costco will only go where Costco wants to go.

People on the coast are wasting hours and energy driving to SR only to leave sales tax revenue behind.

If you live in Ukiah and don't want the things that will eventually come like Costco move to the coast where it will never end up and then drive back to Ukiah to do your shopping. The sales tax stays here anyway which is what we need to capture.

Bring on Costco to Ukiah. Years ago, I lived in Fortbragg. What a long day it was to go to Santa Rosa, Costco and whatever shopping we needed. It was worth it. Saved a lot of money. We also took lists of items needed from other family's, obtaining whatever. It worked very well for all.

Target & Costco can go down by WalMArt. Plenty of Room for both.

The city wouldn't pay for the required street changes... Costco woudn't pay for them either, so Costco backed out. Now DDR will pay for them. Its a win-win for everyone.

Uhh... My family is spending at LEAST $400 a month in SR going to Costco. I am NOT currently spending that here. That tax revenue would STAY HERE instead of going to Sonoma. There are a LOT of other families like mine here.

Think about it.
