NEED and WANT are two different things! If you don't have what you need that is a problem. If you don't have what you want change it, like your location!

The problem is a planning department that withholds changes and permitting for projects that are economically viable then directly competes with the developers using public funds and the zoning process as leverage. As for the Costco who cares. The issue is a department that uses the process to hamper the efforts of landowners who are trying to use the property they own in a way the owner sees fit. Was DDR ever given a zoning hearing or were they just put on indefinite hold and forced to go to the voters? Yes the voters have spoken and there will be no cleanup, no jobs and no redevelopment of an otherwise undesirable site. The voters have also ensured that the site will remain a blighted mess for years to come. Congratulations. If you read the article in today's paper focusing on Charlie stump he says two thing of note:
"Focusing on infill development and redevelopment are methods being used to alleviate the growth pressures being felt by Ukiah, a city that is reaching build-out", Stump said.
"Such an approach may allow young people to remain in the community, build a career, buy a home and raise a family"
Do you know what build out means?
Do you think that young people have career opportunities in this area? Outside the weed industry?
Do you think they will have an affordable place to live if no residences are built?
Do you give a ****?
Community activist?
Another thing you right wing anti-government types have in common is not only do you disagree with our system of laws, you are also ignorant about how it works.

In your confused email you have the same planning department supposedly withholding changes from the developer and them buying land to compete with them. What an idiot.

First, no one refused to cooperate with the developer. The developer, DDR, never submitted a completed application, but the planning dept. was working with them anyway. If DDR thought they were not being treated right, they could have asked their three vote majority on the Board to give the appropriate direction. Instead, for political reasons, their allies on the Board were begging DDR to back off until after the election. Jeff Adams adimitted this at the election forum.

Second, no planning dept. bought land to compete with anyone. The Ukiah City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency, approved purchase of land at the south end of town, not to compete with a project that doesn't exist, but to remove obstacles to building out that area.

So you confuse the City with the County, and you confuse the role of Planning staff with that of the elected officials. All you care about, as you say once more, is for the landowners to use their property the way they see fit. Sorry, but once again we are a nation of laws. Get use to it. And while you are at it, try reviewing eighth grade civics.

Hey SHALLOW MIKE, We are at a beginning not an end! Measure A went down because it was HOGWASH! As long as you are around nothing will be done. Quit Bitchi-g and make a suggestion that is viable. Thou Dost Protest To Much!
I think you're misunderstanding me. The "hogwash" part is using DDR as a scapegoat for local Government inaction going back YEARS before DDR bought the Masonite site. The ed. piece sounded like "Now that we're no longer in the evil clutches of an evil out of state corporation we can get something done."

We could have been "getting something done" long, long ago, but the fact is, we haven't- not County wide, anyway.

Also I HAVE made suggestions- tax revenue sharing, cooperation between city and county to streamline services and become more efficient, a rezone of the Masonite site to something that will actually work for all of us- Seriously, do you believe "heavy industry" will ever come up here? And if it did would you want a sawmill, or a slaughterhouse, or even another Masonite at the site? I'll bet "heavy industry" would be fought tooth and nail by many of the same people who fought to keep the site zoned for heavy industry in the first place.

Whatever, the election is over and the people have spoken, so celebrate democracy and now let's see if we can get our elected officials to quit discussing how poorly they're compensated and start work on completing a UVP, among other things.
Kudos

Kudos to you Mike! All of the issues you mention do need attention and soon! Measure A simply did not allow the rezoning per DDR's dictates. There was nothing there that decided the future zoning. Heavy Industry brings up the memories of Smoke Stacks and Burning Rivers. If that is what you think or believe will go there I think you are mistaken. Industry is not like that any longer. It is future thinking Industry that we need to attract. Not lumber mills, slaughter houses or another Masonite.
DDR is being used as a scapegoat because they put themselves in that position. The trick is to learn and move on. Depending on what DDR does with their property what suggestions do you have for a long term solution as to the use of this site as an industrial site?

Hey No Sence, You really have NO sense do you? How about I buy the property next to your house and put in a toxic waste dump? A PIG Farm? A RENDERING PLANT? A LANDFILL? It is my property and I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT with it! Any problems? I bet this would be a problem if it were next door to your house. Zoning laws exist for a reason!
I don't think there are any houses next door to the site???

Solar Power and Green Energy are the Future! This site is perfectly situated to become a solar/alternative power plant and manufacturing plant. The solar farm as seen from Hwy 101 will be an excellent billboard for the product and the manufacturing of panels and all the associated equipment give us the high wage and benefit jobs of the future. Include a training center too! The transportation corridor is there and the labor force is in place. This is a NO BRAINER! We will also benefit from a clean reliable power source of the future.
Hey MendoMike, give up the beef and make a suggestion rather that suggesting others do so then complaining. What is your idea?

Yes, you are correct again. Only been here for thirty three years. But still from out of town, Novato, born and raised!
So, the fact remains when I buy the property next to your house, because I do have the $$$, you won't mind me putting in a TIRE BURNING DUMP? With no zoning the way you suggest NITWIT, I can do that and you can say nothing about it.
So NIMBY, What is your answer?:)

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Taurus

Keep calm! Your emotions are becoming increasingly heightened and intense today. As a result, you're likely to take things much more seriously than usual. That's wonderful if you're involved in a hot and heavy encounter with Mr or Ms Right, but it won't be such good news if you go overboard about silly trifles. If you're doing some last-minute shopping you'll want to be as extravagant as your budget allows. Or is it a case of Budget...? What budget?
