In order to allow local residents to share information about fires in their areas, events being canceled or other fire-related topics, The Daily Journal has set up this bulletin board. Please keep your input limited to fire-related information so it does not become too cluttered with extraneous comments and make it difficult for important relevant information to be posted.

Something to be careful about- the NASA MODIS image that's linked to from the UDJ site is from their "image of the day" gallery and probably will not be kept up to date. Please do not rely on it for fire updates.
I personally found their high-res version more helpful. Lake Mendocino is not very visible, but you can find Ukiah with help from Google Earth or Google Maps. High-resolution version: http://modis.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/images/ima... |

Good Luck To All from a former '70's Mendocino guy. Unfortunately MODIS is twice daily, but I think the NOAA Smoke Detection and Hazard Mapping System combines MODIS with GOES satellite
The current active fire data site has a kml file that you can open with Google Earth to see the exact location of the fires seen by MODIS. The fires were then put on top of the Google Earth image. Much less smoke now in the Redwood Valley area than in the last few days, though it's still pretty bad. Last night was a real choker. I assume Ukiah air is much clearer now as well, relatively speaking. Just a shift in the winds? Or fires going out?

The smoke here in Redwood Valley this evening has started to worsen again, it always does every evening and then lets up a bit in the afternoon. This is due to the air cooling and condensing, and that causes the smoke to be brought lower to the ground.

Does anyone know if Hendy Woods is in danger, or is "smoked out"? We have reservations to camp there over the weekend. Need to know if we should cancel or not. Thanks for the info. best of luck to everyone!

Since it isn't good for taping ducts or ducks,I found that it works for Grrrrreat for indoor use [hydroponically speaking] It helps keeps the DEA dogs at bay too! Only make sure it is charcoal lined. |

location 6 miles west of lake guesstimation based on round trip of choppers flying overhead, minute from overhead empty down to river to fill up to back overhead, 2 1/2 minutes from overhead to dump and get back overhead, guessing fire 4 1/2 to 5 mi west of pillsbury ??? visibility the shits |
