Let's get real. Downtown has nothing. I can't even think of the last time I bought something local. The only reason to have a "local" store would be to launder some dope money. Maybe it was a good crop this year.

Yep, downtown Ukiah has all the charm of main street Mogadishu. Yippee, an ancient courthouse surrounded by crumbling storefronts! Oh, and an "organic" brew pub is available to get a quick bite. For the record, a kitty litter covered turd is more appetizing than the "cuisine" that the Ukiah Brewing Company serves up. No thanks Ukiah, I'll take my wads of money to Sonoma County where "growth" is allowed.

two reasons I don't shop downtown, lack of parking and parking tickets if you stay in the same spot for 1-1/2 hours. Forget about doing some shopping and then going to get a bite to eat downtown, you are thanked with a 26.00 ticket.

shopping downtown is suicide....what u save in sales is given back in parkin tickets by the parking nazi.there r a few specialty shops that r greatly needed that we enjoy when we come to town..
..maybe 1 restraunt work eating at.The mens clothing store is a classic ole shop, habbitat is my moms fav.The halloween/party shop is a must is and fun .,the old book store is worth a stop. The candy store is worthless the chocolate in the case is always turning gray, the clothing stores r way over priced.there r 6 shops witin 2 blocks that sell silver jewelry..there is no loyality amoung merchants...If one store has something another store copys them and cuts into their sales..survival of the quickest but dont cut your neighbors throat.
will stay loyal to a few hard working people w/orignal shops but the rest need to rethink their vocation.

The Brewery is the only crappy place to eat downtown. and yes, everything but their fried food sucks. Good places are: Mi Cocina, Villa del Mar, Schats, Local Flavor, Round Table Pizza, Happy Thai, Patrona's and the North State Cafe are all really good!! I eat downtown everyday. No need to go to Sonoma and a lot CLOSER!! enjoy...

Oh my gosh people...

Habitat is GREAT for special gifts for weddings and such, and their products are lovely. The book store is a must often - try browsing the sale books. Heidi's Yarns carries great selection, lots of needles, but the best is personal service and advice. Three Sisters also has some cute giftables. Mendocino Bounty carries a great variety of fun things. Mike and Denise @ Dig! are fabulous and offer good prices and access to nearly everything you'd want and will get it if they don't have it. There are other stores worth the look as well.

I agree that the clothing stores are all over-priced and don't cover many sizes - not many petite young women I know who can afford their prices unless they have a profitable grow.

Regarding the parking... Would it kill most Ukians to walk a block or two?

Thank you very much! Here is my 2 cents, I just printed Coupons for free. You can print coupons before you shop by searching "Printapons" online
You can tell a front when u never see the owner...But most of the shops are owner on site...I have never met some of the newer shops owners..But the good old stores still know be my name...Habitat,Mulligans,Incog nito,McNabs, the owners run there own shops 24/7 and remember what book I bought ..or ask about the baby shower or party or how my son liked his shirt..I like that about shopping local everyone knows your name..you stay loyal and they give you 100%..Retail is a tough business you get what u give..Take your dollars someone where else but dont bitch when a store wont open for you on a special day or come in when there closed to blow up your balloons or custom fit a tux at your house because your dad is wheelchair..get a clue.there are some diamonds in the rough in Ukiah.

Downtown Ukiah SUCKS!!! Utterly worthless. Everything is cheaper online, and it comes to your house. Online also has this one huge thing going for it....You don't have to go to downtown Ukiah. You don't have to interact with people from ukiah.

Why do you people continue to live here. No sarcasm, just a serious question.

I mean Ukiah isn't the greatest place on earth (that'd be Disneyland) But is isn't THAT bad. There are lots of nice places and things to do.

Is it because you can grow your dope 'legally'?(now that WAS sarcasm)

I don't blame local small businesses for seeking all the positive publicity they can get. The economy sucks, times are tough and everybody is trying to make the best of a bad situation. But these are exactly the same reasons why I won't be doing much shopping here this year. If I'm going to spend the money, I want the best deal possible with the most convenience on something I actually need. How much f'ing yarn does somebody need? When's the last time mom asked you to get her the latest Dean Koontz book for Christmas? And a "giftable" is basically another word for a piece of crap that's going to clutter up your house for the next ten years. And let's not even go into the dope smoking mutants you're expected to wait in line next to. This town has been dying a slow death for years and it's all self inflicted. It's next to impossible to get approval to open a new business unless you shell out the bucks to make all the changes to your property the city demands. Your law enforcement is on life support. And drug dealers are the new royalty. Talk about a taste of downtown...

When I am in Ukiah, I go "downtown" to the bank, the post office or MacNab's. THAT IS ALL THERE IS.
AND GET OUT QUICK, before I get a ticket or run over by a skateboarder.

This place is a joke. Ever try to return something to one of the local shops downtown? Boy, you would think you wanted to have sex with their first born. I shop big box only, easy in, easy out, easy parking, and easy returns. Screw this dump.

I only go to Schat's or Mi Cocina downtown. Book store is useless, they have a limited invetory. If I want ot order a book I will through Amazon and save money.
Everybody wants us to shop local and some of our biggest "local" businesses use all out of town suppliers (Dick Selzer).

How lomg has Costco be trying to come to town? My bet is the city will screw up this attempt too.

Generally speaking, buying or selling anything is a low class thing to do. If purchasing a "thing" is not a positive social event, then obviously you do not really need the "thing".

I almost never go into a useless corporate box store because the atmosphere so totally sucks. Why does anyone want to purchase anything in a barn? There is no service in a corporate barn store. Customers are expected to do all of the work. You have to walk a block and a half dodging squeaking shopping carts to search for and find a package of balony at five cents less than you would on the internet. Unless you just happen to run into an ex-wife or two, nobody will treat you like a dignified human being in a box store. Pick out the most offensive commercial on your telly (maybe one of the automobile insurance commercials or how about one of those sadistic pharmaceutical commercials?) and you are instantly imagining yourself scurrying through the maze of your favorite wally mart store.

and how about the imaginitive architecture of big box stores?(as if anybody in Ukiah cares about architecture)

I do not shop at Walmart because it is a depressing social experience. There are any number of locally owned shops in Ukiah where they treat their customers very respectfully. I like that. Human respect is priceless.

PS

Quality of life is your most important possession.

You cannot buy quality of life in a corporate box store.

You have no idea what it's like to have disability on your legs and can't walk long distances. You have no care then in life for people that would like to shop but have limited mobility. SHAME ON YOU.

Wow you must live a miserable life then to think American stores such as WalMart are depressing. I find what I need and out of the store in a few minutes. I can't stand going to local stores and then getting held up by people in front of me in line talking about subjects not related to the store that I am in. The 21st century is the age of in and out service. Guessing you're too old to keep up.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Aries

It won't be long before you start to feel bored today, unless you can distract yourself - you're switching from one activity to another. Ideally, you should keep yourself amused by doing something that's unusual or challenging, otherwise you'll be tempted to stir up trouble just to see what happens next! Even though you know that's a bad idea, you won't be able to resist, unless you've got something better to do with your time.
