This is a good family with some terribly ill members. I know this lady has sown destruction in her community, and the only redemption she may have is pouring all that energy she used for greed into repairing some of the damage she has helped bring about.
She is just part of the problem, getting rid of her will have the same effect as pulling one paddle to get the whole cactus. Why does she have so many customers? These are people who will now find someone else. Covelo has no opportunities except for those with privilege or connections. Rob these proud people of their language, rich culture and make them live in a camp of the BIA's choosing and this is what you get. The problem is not this one old lady folks. Restore the pride and dignity of these people. Everything has been taken for them, can you blame them for social problems after taking their society from them? |
||||
How many years have they had to make the difference themselves? I am sorry but just because I am white doesnt mean I am privileged! I have had to work for everything I have (which isnt much) and work every day to keep what I have. Dont give me this garbage of we robbed their land from them - get over it already - besides giving them free housing, medical care, dental care, and allowing them to have casinos on their land TAX FREE I think is more than enough to make up for the loss of "their" land. |
||||
She chose to do what she did. She had a decent place to make an honest living and chose not to. She contributed to many childrens nightmares and troubles by her own choosing. Her daughter is just as guilty and should be charged as well. She did not care about the thousands of lives she helped destroy I hope they lock her up. They should also seize her bank accounts, resteraunt and home that she owns. The people who lost their stolen property to this woman should also be compensated. As far as the poor Indian. I am a tribal member and I choose to work. I lost family members to this terrible drug yet I choose not to follow in their footsteps. We live in the aftermath of it. I choose to work and I do not live in a free home. I have a mortgage that I must pay. I also pay monthly for my dental and health insurance. As far as the casino goes.. Have you been there? It is a joke. The tribal members get nothing from that in return. It does supply a couple of jobs but that is it. |

B4D4SS - You don't know what your talking about! There is not enough space to go over everything, and I'm sure you would'nt want to waste your time in finding the real truth about the Indian People!!!!

way to go bob! you tell them ;)

Nope I wouldnt because why dwell on what happened in the past when you should be worrying about taking care of yourself and your families for the future. I dont hear anyone mentioning Irish discrimination (yes it happened) because we didnt whine and cry about it - we moved on! No one is equal and it is because many of the "minorities" who continue to classify themselves. When will we be truly color-blind and hold people accountable for their own actions? She sold drugs and destroyed her own people because whites took over the land decades ago? C'Mon!!!!! |

1 However that said, yes it is also time for our people to move on and into the times, make choices and take the opportunities that are out there to make a better life for our children. Yes I am Native. I have a college education, own a home, and have a beautiful family and a great career that gives back to my community and I practice what I have been taught of our ways. We all have those opportunities. Many Natives continue to try and blame the past for their present failures. Why? Because as we all know its easier to blame others than to accept personal responsibility and move forward. There are many truths to both sides of this argument and to ignore either is plain ignorance. |
|||
I didnt say to ignore the past I said to not dwell on it. Kudos for doing something with your life and giving back to the community - no matter what nationality you are! These are the things that should matter and not the color of your skin. |

It really isn't a matter of skin color more than social dynamics but I know what you mean and I agree with you. The whole skin color thing comes from the government if you really look at history. You made some pretty bold statements in your original post that a lot of Natives would take offense to such as, "Dont give me this garbage of we robbed their land from them - get over it already - besides giving them free housing, medical care, dental care, and allowing them to have casinos on their land TAX FREE I think is more than enough to make up for the loss of "their" land." That's a very non caring, non understanding way to get your point across. Our land was robbed, that's not garbage and how long would it take you to 'get over' having your entire world destroyed? Who puts the time limit on healing? Why SHOULD we get over it? Because Non Natives say so? Because they don't understand? Do the Jewish still suffer the consequences of their genocide? Should they get over what Hitler did?How about other cultures that suffered so called manifest destiny? Who says the housing that tribes receive is free? Medical/dental care? Natives don't get free care… underprivileged people get Medical, it is not solely for Indians and besides, most tribal groups supply that on their own. "their" land as you say? Well it wasn't the land of those who took it. All these 'provisions' that you think are "more than enough to make up for what happened" came at the ultimate cost of a nation of people, families of innocents. Tribal lands are sovereign, U.S. government dictating taxes and other restrictions on sovereign land is no different than trying to force US policy in a foreign country. You may disagree with this but it does not change the fact that it is true. It is this kind of thinking that I take issue with and what prompted my 1st post. It's a very one sided approach to the subject. Now on your other points about not dwelling on the past, taking opportunities, working hard regardless of your ethnicity. I agree 100% and as I mentioned I know that many Native people are just as guilty as being as one sided as your original post. As I said there are many truths to both sides of this issue. It IS time that Natives step up and start moving forward without forgetting the past and in fact it is happening, albeit at a very slow pace but again, who puts the time limit on such issues? You? me? Thanks for the conversation. Oh and thanks for the kudos! |

METH is a by product or the illegal MJ industry.
|

Don't think so. Nazis used it during WWII and it was here way before pot industry. |

1 I choose not to forget the past. I am a California Indian first and American 2nd.Your original statement was very ignorant and most racist. Recalling the horrors of not so a distance past made me strive to excell in sports and later in scholastics to prove I was as equal as the dominant race of whites at the time. Unfortunately a lot of my Indian brothers and sisters don't have the same opportunity as I did. And I do feel compassion for them. It hurts my heart and spirit to see them without hope. Unless you have walked a mile in our moccasins you don't have the faintest clue what you are talking about. |

1 bannished from her village for her actions. But the US Government doesn't allow us to practice our old ways of justice. Being bannished from your tribe was comparable to a death sentence. |

No on can restore their pride and dignity for them. This can only be accompolished at grass roots level. The elders and other interested members of the community should try to come together to solve their common problems. A old Native American tradition of healing is to create/attend a talking circle. Identify the problems as well as the assets within the community. The great white father in Ukiah or Washington can do little until a community acts in a cohesive manner to build upon their strengths and to minimize their weaknesses. imho |

This is a METH charge not a racial issue!!! why does everything written about Covelo have be a skin issue? METH knows no boundaries, race, age, background, education, etc. So the focus should be about the evil drug not the culture. What is wrong with you people? I'm native and I DON'T use drugs. If a another person; White, Hispanic, or any other background is caught for METH or Pot, nobody says anything about their ethnic background, why is it only the Indian? Are poeple in general looking for reason to hate Native Americans? Focus on the real problem, the drug charge!!!

Was selling dope when I was in high school, then fled ahead of the law, ended up in Modoc County and several other locations also selling dope. She is a disgrace to Native Americans and as another post stated in traditional time she would have been banished and ultimately died. She belongs in incarceration until she is too old to deal drugs. How long? Depends on how long she lives. As for her granddaughter she is a product of being raised by a meth dealing grandmother. Too bad she has a beautiful young child and a new baby.

Yes meth was around durinf Adolphs Natzi Germany during WWII, and even earlier dating to the 1890's in Germany. Today however it is a by product of the illegal Marijuana culture, society/industry THE DIRT BAG HAS MONEY from MARIJUANA to spend and SPENDS it on METH!!! Get your HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS GIRLY!!!!
