Tybee.......is really high. yea that seems like what mine was when I first moved there...The Hammocks at Whitmarsh. Although I think it has changed names or parent companies... Probably has not changed much. its a good place safe place to live if you dont mind the drive into downtown and back... Also if you have a dog taking them in the marsh is fun, dogs love it.

A little Concerned wrote: How's the cost of living? Tybee sounds wonderful, but I bet I'd never be able to afford a place to live. I can't buy anything, so it'd have to be rental property and from what I've seen so far, most studio apartments start at $600 or $700. A one or two bedroom would take my whole months salary! Guess I'll have to commute quite a ways unless someone has suggestions for safe and affordable areas closer by. My first consideration is safety! I am excited about the possible move but from what some people are telling me, I am also a little anxious. there are some very nice carriage/garage apt.'s for rent around here that are within the 450.00 to 600.00 range in very safe enviroments. mostly in the historic district and ardsley park area. go west of victory. im talking awesome spots. great locations. a great deal of them are not listed but if you drive around you can find them.

If you have a grill, Savannah's safe..... otherwise I felt safer living in New Orleans. I know this is the South, but this city has much more crime, the people are not nearly as nice and there is absolutely nothing stimulating to do here. Please, someone from here list great things to do with your family each weekend. This place sucks, and really if you are not living in Savannah due to the crime and you are living in the outlying areas, you just spend all of your time driving...how dull. I live in Mayfair which is nice, but this neighborhood is targeted by thieves. Never thought that I would say I miss the Big Easy.

A little Concerned wrote: Thanks all! Your comments and suggestions have been very helpful! I'm leaving a small rural community in the North Ga mountains and will miss my small town but I'm sure I'll find something similar, maybe not right in Savannah, but maybe the surrounding areas as some of you have suggested. I'm already seeing some of the neighboring friendliness and help from ya'll! If you are living in Dahlongea, Cleveland, Clermont, Hiawasse, Gainsville, or any other lil north Ga. town in that area, you will be deeply disapointed if you move down here. I do love Savannah, but I lived in that area for a while as a teen ager, I still go up north for vacation and camping. I miss those mountains terribly. The beauty is different here in the coastal area, it is beautiful but never as eye opening as those clean water falls and clear rivers and rapids in North Georgia. Stay put.

Well...I know I am a year too late for this conversation, so if anyone is reading this, here are my thoughts. I was born and spent the first 10 years of my life here in Savannah. Parents split, we moved. Dad stayed behind in Richmond Hill, so of course I was back and forth all growing up. I've been waiting to get back to the coast since high school (10 years ago) and I've finally found myself nestled into a great rental in Ardsley Park surrounded by fantastic neighbors, wonderful little neighborhood parks, and the biggest oak trees dripping with Spanish moss you have EVER seen. This is home. There is something about it. Savannah gets into your soul. It is a city with a past, a mysterious past, that constantly keeps you wanting more. Just driving down Washington Ave or Whitaker St on a dreary rainy spring day will make you feel like you are experiencing the same rain that our ancestors felt in the 1800s! Ever city has crime, but not every city has an undertone that whispers your name. Savannah is AMAZING! And I am blessed to call it home!

I love Savannah, it has crime like every other city in the US. Be aware of your surroundings and use common sense.

I am looking for folks who lived in Thunderbolt, GA in the early 50's and where I went to school at Thunderbolt Elementary. It was a great place to grow up, and am thinking of relocating there since I've retired. Is it still a good place to live?

I think all of those writing negative comments about Savannah, are over-exaggerating, and have never lived in an urban environment like....NYC, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. You people sound like you have lived in a "bubble" all of your lives, and used to living in areas where there is diversity in people and cultures, etc. Perhaps, if the rich would spread some of the wealth to the poorer communities, there would not be as much crime.
