My child is going to turn 19 soon; Will it automatically stop or do I need to start some kind of proceedings? Thanks for any help with matter.

Child support is set up on an account basis. A certain amount is required to be paid per year. When this requirement is met, all works fine. If at anytime there were payments not made or not the required amount paid, it remains as owed and the support will not stop until that is paid in full. If the child goes straight from high school to college, it can be continued through the college period to a point. You should not have to do anything to stop it unless these factors do not exist. It is possible someone isn't following up as needed. Hope this helps, it is from my own personal experience, 16 years of it.

My son is already 18 but has not graduated from high school. My ex-wife called me and told me he had quit school and moved away from home so I stopped paying her child support. I got a call from HR services and they told me I still had to pay support to her until he reached 19 even if he does not live at home. Is this true? I thought per Alabama law once they were 18 and they moved away from home I was no longer liable for paying support?

If you were current on all payments, you need to get the documentation showing the dropout from school. You should have court papers regarding the support, find out if it was outlined to be until 19. If you are required to continue to pay for some reason, it should be going to the child as they are an adult. Normal circumstances eliminate child support at this age if they have dropped out of school. You will need to get your original paperwork and determine what the details were.

WHAT AMAZES ME IS JUST HOW FAR THE SORRY ENDED PARENTS WILL GO TO AVOID PAYING CHILD SUPPORT.I HAVE TWO CHILDREN THAT MY EX REFUSES TO SUPPORT AND I LIVE IN TENNESSEE AND HE LIVES IN ALABAMA.IT IS VERY HARD TO GET HELP FROM ANOTHER STATE TO ENFORCE SUPPORT.THIS SORRY EXCUSE FOR A FATHER WORKS FOR HIS DADS COMPANY AND GETS PAID CASH AND WONT PAY A DIME TO HELP SUPPORT HIS CHILDREN.I HAVE SAID BEFORE THAT IF HE HAD EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED HIS CHILDREN; SUPPORT WOULDNT HAVE BEEN A BIG ISSUE BUT THEY NEVER HEAR FROM HIM AND HE CANT EVEN TELL U THEIR BDAYS.SO ....I DIDNT MAKE THESE CHILDREN ALONE,SO HE NEEDS TO PAY,,,, FOR EVERY TEAR MY DAUGHTER HAS SHED FOR HIM AS FOR MY SON,, HE HATES THEM ALL,,HES OLDER AND WISER AND SEES THE TRUTH,,,OUTTA SITE, OUTTA MIND!!!!!!!!!

I am sorry that He is that way....I have paid all mine and was just wondering if I had to go to a hearing at 19 when it legally ends or if it just stops. I will pray that He gets a change of heart.

I just got a divorce this year, signed the papers in Sept. The Judge told me that I would have to go to DHR and file a paper to have the support stopped at 19. If I dont file the paper I could end up paying a month or two extra til things get filed right. I divorced in Lawrence County Alabama.
