Base advises there will be more booms

It will be interesting to see how many people complain about this. Personally, I would love to be living down there again just to hear them. It's one of the things I miss from my childhood.

People will complain of course but if holloman was not here Alamogordo would not exist.

Oh well, some people would complain even if they were hung with a brand new rope.

A friend who was a pilot told me they were once blamed for a woman's face lift falling due to a sonic boom. Sorry honey, that's just called garvity!

I will be the first..... I hate them. I live at Holloman. Never fails as soon as I get baby down for nap.......BOOM!~crying baby! UGH!

Thats a pretty cheap price for FREEDOM--at least they are OUR jets making the noise

I love planes, I worked in the aviation industry in Chicago for almost 10 years just to be around planes. All my life I built airplane models and still have some planes here in my New Mexican home. I even flew for a year or so.

HOWEVER, one does have to ask if sonic booms damage property? I know of a friend in the desert, by the base who says occasionally, her windows shatter.

My house, up in High Rolls, which is totally exposed and rises about 40 feet high, will literally shake for a couple of seconds as though we had an earthquake, my dogs and cats go crazy as well. Constant shaking cracks the drywall.

The Concorde was banned from travelling at supersonic speeds over land because of damage to property ... the question has to be asked if it's ok for property to be damaged by sonic booms, if so, who is responsible?

The sonic booms and their effects were analyzed in the HAFB Transition of the 49th FW Environmental Assessment. This was made public last year and they had several community meetings. The document was made public through the library downtown and is probably still there for perusal. The actual effects will be minimal as they analyzed historic and non-historic structures and included animals and wildlife.

If you are worried about property damage from sonic booms, don't live next to an Air Force base! I've experienced an F-22 sonic boom once, very impressive. I would love to live someplace like Holloman and see those planes fly more often.

I have experienced many sonic booms.
Ok, the house shudders for a couple of seconds.....
It's worth it to me to know the US has planes in the sky.
Bye the way, I flew on the Concorde many years ago.
It was a very wonderful experience, somewhat snug, but an experience I will remember forever.

My only question is why they're conducting the flights now just to get people used to them.

It seems as though we'd get used to them just as fast when the F-22's get here.

If they had said they're trying to get the pilots and flight crews used to supersonic flight it would make a little more sense.

Our first F-22's will get here in June. The people that complain about the train whistles will probably be complaining about the sonic booms. I've lived here all my life and they rattle our windows but have never caused any damage. I love the sound of freedom!

I'm jealous Pugsley. I would have loved to fly on the Concorde!

The railroad quiet zone is not really a good thing. I'm surprised that city commissioners taught it as an accomplishment.

I agree. They did the same thing up near Albuquerque. How stupid is that??!!

I agree with the gradual increase in Sonic Booms to get residents familiar with them. A few a week and gradually increasing them is better than all of a sudden having dozens a day and wondering what they were. The last time they had a couple F-22s here, people called in the sonic booms as explosions and possible terrorist attacks.

At least those persons that have lived here for a few decades shouldn't need to get used to them as they had the F-15 here for a while.

Hi PF, I will tell you the story behind this if you feel like listening.
My late Papa worked for BAC (Bristol Aerplane Company) and had a big hand in developing Concorde.
He passed away in 1983. But because of his standing and position within the company, my Nana, when she traveled, was able to get employee seats which were allocated, and got then at very good prices.
She would call me often, and one time during one of our conversations, she asked me if, the next time I flew home, how would I like to fly from JFK on the Concorde? Of course, I was flabbergasted, as it had always been a dream of mine, but something my hubby and I could never dream of doing at that time.
What my Nana did next was one of the most wonderful happenings of my lifetime.
She arranged my next trip home, with tickets from JFK to Heathrow and back.
I flew home that year on a supersonic plane, a plane from which you could see the curvature of the earth, and you could look down and see little dots, which were other jets crossing the Atlantic, but we were flying at 58,000 feet, and they were at 33,000 feet, and they looked just like flies!
The flight took three and a half hours. They didnt have movies on there back then. There was no need. Too quick of a flight.
The meals and the service were that best I had ever had. The British air crew treated all the passengers as if we were royalty.
When Nana and my family met me at Heathrow, I couldnt help thinking how tired she looked, and it wasnt until a couple of days later that I found out she was suffering from heart disease.
I had planned to stay one month, and Nana passed away two weeks after I arrived. It was summertime, and she always enjoyed sitting in her garden surrounded by her flowers. Thats where she died, in her beautiful garden.
I still have the used tickets and it goes without saying, the memories of the most wonderful adventure of my life, and the celebration of one of the most generous and kind beautiful women ever put on this earth.
You see, she knew she was dying, and getting me home in time for her passing was so important to her.
Flying home several weeks later, I looked out of the small window, and watched the shooting stars. I had a feeling one of them was Nana watching over me.
I will never forget my Nana, or my fabulous flight on the supersonic Concorde.

When we broke the sound barrier, I wouldnt have known except the pilot announced it. I can remember a slight surge or thrust which I thought was just normal.

Just be prepared. I have been around alot of Aircraft in my life but the F-22 is by far the loudest I have encountered. When they were here on Okinawa I would be inside of my Concrete House on base, and I wouldnt be able to hear the Person next to me. Not that I mind...just be prepared. It will probably effect the residents on Base more than in town. And when you live on base it's just to be expected.
