I recently lost my cat and went to the Lindsay pound to see if he was there. I wasn't allowed to see where the cats are kept so I couldn't know for sure if he was there. What are they hiding? Why can't I go and look for him?

I am currently fostering 2 of the dogs that came to MPLS / St. Paul on the transport from the Lindsey Animal Shelter. Although I am blessed to be fostering 2 of the sweetest, well behaved, handsome dogs on the planet, it is appalling to think they would have been euthanized had they not been saved. I am completely astonished that this kind of treatment is still allowed to continue. There is no doubt in my mind that if the Lindsey Shelter had any sort of reputable management or adoption program, both of the dogs that I am fostering would have found good homes months ago.

Granted my foster children are doing great now, when they first came to me they were ill and we went through an unbelievable battery of testing, antibiotics and Vet care because of the bacteria’s found in their systems and their general health, both were underweight, one of them severely.

I know that I am 2005.66 Miles from Lindsey and maybe people are just different in the “heartland” but I just cannot believe that not only does their local government completely lack the compassion, any type of feeling or the ability to manage this animal shelter, but that the citizens of Lindsay knowing of the disservice being done to their community allow this type of blatant negligence and abuse to continue is not only appalling, but disheartening.

Is there any Humanity left in Lindsay? If you are a citizen of Lindsay, I ask you demand to your local government that this type of inhumane treatment stops now!

You couldn't because the cats are kept in an area that is so unbelieveably inhumane. This is supposed to be addressed as well. I have heard this from the person that was actually helping the animals get out until they fired her because they wanted their incompetent staff to try and take over rescue. The shelter is paid for by the people, the problem is that the people don't know that their taxes pay for the inhumane treatment of the animals. Take the press with you and they have to open up the shelter and let you see if your cat is there.

I am with PuppyPorch, in fact, I am a co-founder of PuppyPorch. I have personally done and been part of many many transports and worked with a lot of shelters across the country and while I have seen some bad situations, with some education, resources and help, all of these shelters were able to turn around. I can't believe that a supposedly educated, perceived to be of relative intelligence city and state could have such a "good ole boy" mentality. I am so appauled and disgusted that I can hardly comprehend that these people even realize we live in the year 2008. It's like a group of non-recovering alcoholics having a meeting with a bunch of non-recovering co-dependents and I say that with a lot of compassion. Been there - done that. But there comes a time when (okay, humor me here) reasonable adults (I know it's a stretch-but stay with me)actually look in the mirror and say "time for a change". So what is Lindsay's excuse?

I have the litter of puppies that came in with their mom when they were about a week old. Mom was expected to survive. Our vets said it is an absolute miracle she made it. The puppies I hand fed every 4 hours for weeks. Two puppies died on transport, 1 died about 24 hours after arrival to MN, 5 died at the age of 3 weeks, one died last week and 2 are still alive. Tessa and Tate are now 6 weeks old and we won't know if they will actually beat this virus for about another 6 weeks. Distemper (from all that I have read) runs its course between 2 weeks and 3 months. Do you have any idea how heartbreaking it is to go through this? The devastation that I feel each and every time we lose a dog due to health reasons sends me into a depression for a couple of days. I don't save animals to have someone elses ignorance or laziness kill them. Honestly I can't believe this shelter hasn't been shut down by the Dept of Ag and/or the HSUS. Stay tuned for more info and if you have questions or want to see pictures of the two surviving puppies let me know your email and I will forward them to you.

JANUARY 22, 2008. 55+ DOGS KILLED FIRST DAY ON JOB

The Lindsay Shelter has 110 kennels....and they were at half capacity. The "Captain" Wilkinson starts his 1st day on the job. He orders the euthanization of EVERY DOG in the kennel....55+. 16 of those dogs had pending adoptions. A Drug Enforcement officer arrived to pick up a young female German Shepherd that he was entering into a police training program. She was DEAD. Can you just picture the day.....all the dogs were probably thrilled about getting out of their cages, and barking excitedly.....only to end up on the kill table. It didn't matter how young or how old....how pretty or how ugly....they were all dead. This was Wilkinson's 1st day on the job. Can you imagine what the last 7 months have been like at the shelter. HELP TAKE ACTION TODAY.

Britt, I am a friend of Pam Coutelenc's, who sent me your email. I am appalled. This is the kind of thing that is much easier to overlook than look at, because when you look at it you have to take responsibility. And the bottom line is that groups begin with individuals who are willing to take some kind of action. I hope that the local constituency will get involved, even if it is only to send an email or make a phone call, to the people in power on the local level, letting them know that this WILL NOT be accepted. Unfortunately, the only way we can motivate the irresponsible people who are allowing this to happen is by way of their own public embarrassment. So please, make some noise. Speak out and speak up for those who can't do it for themselves. God bless everyone.

Step by step this shelter needs to be restructured quickly so that the animals are safe and that the right people with compassion are leading properly. A shelter should be a safe place for animals.

Interesting to note that the majority of these blogs are from people on the East Coast who learned about the Lindsay Kennel situation the hard way - through their major transport and fostering of Lindsay dogs. The fact that no one from the City of Lindsay has responded to these blogs shows the terrible lack of compassion or care. How many people in Tulare County have visited the Lindsay facility? Does anyone locally know what is happening daily at the Lindsay facility? Are the city fathers thought to be taking the public's interest into consideration when managing the city? Have any of the City Council members or the Mayor, the Police Chief or City Manager visited the Lindsay Animal Control? Does anyone in Lindsay know what is being done? Does anyone care?! From this view, Lindsay is a sad reflection on the State of California, the Central Valley & the County of Tulare. In fact, it does not speak well of humanity!

Although I can understand your sympathy for the animals but are you folks serious. Read some of the other blogs about "Lindsay" the City is spending millions on sports complex's and state of the art pool / soccer complex's wellness centers etc but if you read the other blogs they are shooting and killing humans in the streets in Lindsay and you don't see the great citizens of Lndsay or the city council up in arms about it. There has been two murders in the last few weeks, to other young men shot it's getting to be like the wild west in Lindsay and yet no uproar from the town or city council, they are to busy worring about getting construction done, so do you really think they are going to give a rats butt about some abused animals. If people don't matter to them for sure the animals don't matter. Two men stabbed at their prestigous farmers market and you couldn't even find anything about it in the local paper. Read the other blogs and see what really is happening in Lindsay and you will stop wondering why no one in Lindsay cares about the animals. Hey but good luck maybe you can get a rise out of someone about the animals and if you do maybe your next quest could be the people getting stabbed and shot.

Is anybody keeping an eye on the LAC petfinder postings? On Saturday their petfinder list included 105 adoptable dogs.... today there are 74. DO THE MATH!! The adoption rate in this facility is @ 1-2 dogs per week - 31 dogs are missing in 1 day. If they had a great rescue of those dogs why doesn't anyone know about it??? If not, it looks like the killing has begun as predicted. If you care--- write letters to the editor of the local papers- call the city manager and city council- go to the shelter and ask where the dogs are and what their kill rate is- it's a public facility and those records have to be made available to the public whose tax dollars pay for their 'services'.

We are aware of man's inhumanity to man! The Central Valley of CA shows horrifying statistics. I sometimes wonder if this is unique to our valley, but really don't believe it is. Knowing all of that however, does not give us any reason whatsoever to ignore inhumane treatment of animals by an agency that is charged with their care. The end result of our comments goes back too what are the people of Lindsay (Central Valley as well) thinking of? I can almost accept that there are a lot of struggling, low income families who can only attempt to survive, let alone be civic minded. But, I also knkow there are some very wealthy people in the Lindsay area, laarge farms and ranches, plenty of professional people commuting to Porterville, Visalia, Lemoore & Fresno. Why aren't these people putting any of attention, resources and finances into the betterment of Lindsay & the Central Valley?!

THAT BASTERD!!! so now i know what happened to my dog..... an employee (also a friend of my mom) said they took a dog in that fit the description of our missing mini schnauszer.....not to forget to mention he said they picked him up at an elementary school 3 blocks away from my moms house...... when she went looking for him at the pound, that same day, they said they never took him in..... maybe that was just a lie the clerk told us because they put all the dogs down or who ever picked him up sold him on the side which i really doubt because how would my moms friend know about our dog!!!

I have a question. So, have you ever been to the Lindsay shelter Britt? And if not, how do you know where they keep the cats? How do you know its inhumane?
I was told that they dont have a cat viewing place. That it would be a liability to let people go back there. That made perfect sense to me. Do you want people to get scratched? Does that make more sense to you?
