In order for Michigan to grow into the future we need to have a means of transportation for the masses. We should look to Europe for example. I believe that a rail system should travel up I75 for the weekend cottage goers. If we were clever enough we could offer small car transportaion once people arrived at there destination and offer a means to transport weekend recreational equipment as well. A rebuilt high speed rail should be offered to Chicago.

It would be nice to see a rail line INTO Detroit, especially from the North Western areas like Lansing, Howell/Brighton, etc.

I've often thought the same thing. I get sick of the 4 hour drive, and it could be elevated right along the median.

IF, we don't want to be dependent upon oil prices, IF, we want to move forward in the 21st Century, and IF we want to provide transportation to the masses with somewhat reasonable pricing, we need to embrace multiple non-auto based options. Rail is the beginning, and could start between major cities, with other towns added. This should have begun before now, but better late than never.

I like your thinking there, ckc. Perhaps apply it across the board.
Just allowing traffic INTO Detroit would be super.

I'm all for the technological development and advancement for a better future but the only problem I have when such an issue arrives is TAXES. The government has lost all credibility to properly spend our money. I don't trust them to keep tax dollars at a low for ANY development.

Detroit and the surrounding area should absolutely have a high speed rail system. Europe is a perfect example. Their railway system travels through out Europe. It is not contained to an area. The entire U.S. should eventually connect all major cities. It would be benefical for tourism and our ego-system, not to mention the economical savings. Unlike other major cities, the Detroit area, the entire State, is dependant on private automobiles or buses. I also believe the suburbianites would travel to the city "Detroit" more often. Not only for work, but for entertainment purposes too.

I must disagree with you on the last part of your statement. Until if/when Detroit climbs out of it's hellhole status and offers a much greater range of security, people will not want to travel to it via train or any other public transportation. Public transportation have depots or stations, thus requiring everyone to "walk" to their destination as opposed to a personal vehicle which can move them much closer to their destination. In a crime infested city, not many people are willing to risk walking anywhere, unless in a much larger crowd and even then, that's not a guarantee.

Detroit needs to clean up it's reputation and become a safe city, which I don't foresee anytime soon, before it can offer any serious chance of attracting visitors/tourists.

I've been told that the cost of rail transport is much higher than autos so I'm not sure this is the best way to travel in America yet.

Marv, I really do wish you would learn to use a keyboard and proper grammar structures.

If you believe we, as a nation, should halt the advancement of growth for fear of terrorism, then you simply have allowed them to already win. Perhaps you should view the side where it will bring upon new jobs in the security field resulting in rehiring more police officers.

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Taurus

Someone isn't mucking about today, and if they're annoyed about something they'll come right out with it. This means you could be on the receiving end of some zingers, but equally it means that you'll be giving as good as you get. Now, although it will be very tempting to let off steam by giving someone an earful, aren't there better directions in which to channel your energy?
