Hot, humid, sunny days are times when we all want something icy to cool us off. Do you know when, how and why to use ice for an injury regardless of the temperature outside?
Injuries that occur suddenly from an incident that causes trauma to a specific area of the body are called acute injuries. The most common examples of acute injuries are ligament sprains, muscle strains or bone bruises. These types of injuries often occur from falls or collisions.
Because of tissue damage from the acute injury, the following symptoms can develop around the injury site: pain; edema (swelling), which is fluid accumulation; warmth; redness or tenderness. You may also experience stiffness or decreased motion depending on the location and severity of the injury.
Typically these symptoms appear within 24 to 48 hours of the incident. These symptoms are a normal response to the body's natural healing process. They can be minimized to further aid in tissue healing and repairing by applying ice.
Cryotherapy is another term used by the medical community for cold therapy or ice application. The mnemonic R.I.C.E is often used to emphasize the importance of resting, icing, compressing and elevating an acute injury. The main focus of R.I.C.E is minimizing edema, blood and pain to the injury site. Their presence is caused by the fluid and chemical buildup created by the blood vessels that are damaged from the injury. Using the R.I.C.E. principle also allows the body's natural healing process to occur.
Icing an injury can happen through ice packs, ice baths, ice cup massages or specialized cryotherapy machines. Most often, store-bought or homemade ice packs such as a plastic bag filled with ice cubes are used at home. If your skin is too sensitive to direct ice application, you can wrap the ice bag in a thin towel or pillowcase.
Regardless of the method, your body may experience any of these four natural stages from icing: cold; burning/pricking; aching, which may be more painful than the original injury; and numbness. For the maximum benefit of using ice, apply it immediately after your injury and until the injury site is numb. Typically this occurs in 10-15 minutes. Once the area is numb, immediately remove the ice to prevent tissue damage such as frostbite. Using ice for longer periods of time does not provide greater benefit, and frostbite is a serious condition to avoid.
The next ice application should occur only after your skin is no longer bright pink and has returned to a normal sensation, meaning that when you lightly touch the area you iced, it feels the same as the non-iced side. A typical recommendation is waiting at least 45 minutes before you ice the same spot again. Icing several times throughout the day may be beneficial.
Not all acute injuries should be iced. Ice should not be used if the injury occurs over an area that has poor sensation, poor circulation, an infection or an open wound. If your normal skin sensation has changed around your injury, you should avoid using ice until speaking with a medical professional. Your injury may be more severe than just a strain or sprain. If you have any doubt about applying ice to your injury, consult a medical professional before using it.

Entertainment A secular cockfight is a blood sport between two roosters (cocks), or more accurately gamecocks, held in a ring called a cockpit. The first documented use of the word gamecock, denoting use of the cock as to a “game”, a sport, pastime or entertainment, was recorded in 1646.[1] after the term “cock of the game” used by George Wilson, in the earliest known book on the sport of cockfighting in The Commendation of Cocks and Cock Fighting in 1607.
The combatants, referred to as gamecocks, are specially bred birds, conditioned for increased stamina and strength. The comb and wattle are cut off in order to meet show standards of the American Gamefowl Society and the Old English Game Club and to prevent freezing in colder climates (the standard emerged from the older practice of severing the comb, wattles, and earlobes of the bird in order to remove anatomical vulnerabilities, similar to the practice of docking a dog's tail and ears). Cocks possess congenital aggression toward all males of the same species. Cocks are given the best of care until near the age of two years old. They are conditioned, much like professional athletes prior to events or shows. Wagers are often made on the outcome of the match. While not all fights are to the death, the cocks may endure significant physical trauma. In many other areas around the world, cockfighting is still practised as a mainstream event; in some countries it is regulated by law, or forbidden outright.
Cockfighting is considered a blood sport by animal welfare and animal rights activists[2] and others, due in some part to the physical trauma the cocks inflict on each other. Advocates of the "age old sport"[3][4] often list cultural and religious relevance as reasons for perpetuation of cockfighting as a sport,[5] but secular cockfighting is not to be confused with the religious, spiritual and sacred cockfight.

Fred Gee Sanford wrote: <quoted text>Are you afraid or simply ashamed to admit that you support abortion? Do your parish priests know that you're OK with killing babies? I have never stated that I support abortion. I will never personally have an abortion. However, abortion is not illegal in this country. I do understand why some women feel that abortion is a better choice than bringing a fetus to term. If we're opposed to abortion, I feel that we should work to support these women so they don't feel that having the child is such an unsurmountable burden. If you oppose abortion, don't have one. No one's forcing anyone to have an abortion. If you want to prevent someone else from having an abortion, you'd better be prepared to support that child for at least the next eighteen years. What are your views on the death penalty?

Fred Gee Sanford wrote: <quoted text>I approve of the death penalty. And while the Church's position is against it in most cases, a Catholic is not bound by that position they way he is on abortion. Abortion is considered intrinsically immoral. The death penalty is not. Great job spouting all the pro-abortion talking points. You support the murder of unborn children. You are not a Catholic. Nope. The Catechism of the Catholic Church finds it acceptable only when there is no other way to protect society from a dangerous criminal. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. I did not support abortion in my statements. What did Jesus say about judging other people, Fred? I don't think he'd be very happy about you saying I'm not a Catholic.

I also approve of the death penalty. However I ALSO recognize that SOME terrible mistakes have been made in rendering the death penalty to some accused. In those instances monetary judgements of several million or more should be given out to the family of someone put to death, but later found innocent. One convicted ,later proven innocent, the prosecution and their case should be thoroughly investigated!

Fred Gee Sanford wrote: <quoted text>False equivalency FAILS big time. From the Catechism: "Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person. Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically nonexistent."68 Note there is no mention of sanction to a Catholic supporting the death penalty. Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law. Formal cooperation in an abortion constitutes a grave offense. The Church attaches the canonical penalty of excommunication to this crime against human life. "A person who procures a completed abortion incurs excommunication latae sententiae,"77 "by the very commission of the offense,"78 and subject to the conditions provided by Canon Law.79 The Church does not thereby intend to restrict the scope of mercy. Rather, she makes clear the gravity of the crime committed, the irreparable harm done to the innocent who is put to death, as well as to the parents and the whole of society. Quite a difference, n'est ce pas? You are not Catholic. I said that I would never get an abortion, nor would I be responsible for an abortion. You obviously cannot read. You obviously cannot read this sentence either: "the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically nonexistent." If you support the death penalty, you are actively taking another human life. The Catechism aside, I find it interesting that you would place more value on a potential life than on an already-existing life, whether it be a criminal or a mother who would die without an abortion. You, sir, are a hypocrite.
