: for general AP release:
Asbestos levels in Libby’s air are low enough that they don’t pose a significant cancer risk, according to a two-year study presented at Monday’s town hall meeting by the Environmental Protection Agency. “The levels are much, much, much lower than when the mine was operating years ago,” Libby Team Leader Victor Ketellapper said during the meeting. The Libby Asbestos Site’s annual project update served to inform the public on the agency’s long-term site strategies, as well as to take questions and talk about what has been accomplished so far. Three representatives, including Ketellapper, from the EPA’s Region 8 headquarters in Denver, Colo., were on hand, as well as Catherine LeCours of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and Mike Cirian, the EPA’s onsite project manager. The final draft of the results of Libby’s outdoor ambient air study was released Monday just in time for the meeting. The study took air samples from 18 locations in and around Libby, as well as additional reference samples in Helena and Eureka, from October 2006 to June 2008, to determine the levels of Libby amphibole. Ketellapper told attendees that the risk of developing cancer from inhaling outdoor air in Libby is one in 1 million. The EPA reported no statistically significant differences between Helena’s concentrations of Libby amphibole and Libby’s concentrations. We are thrilled", says local area resident Kim Spencer. "Its been a long time coming , and I glad to see the efforts of the EPA pay off". Libby has been involved in a clean up effort by the EPA for the past 9 years. "its all winding down", Bill Beshep says. "We are glad its almost over". |

Mike : You can hide your bitterness for a town and its people behind your "Libby kills , I hate Libby , dont breath in Libby", but at the end of the day even you have to admit that its getting better. I think the position you took has fallen on so many deft ears that its just driving you nuts to look at your past 10 years and realize you were wrong all along. I would ask you to come to terms with it, but you and I know you are not that kind of guy. Don't worry about me or my grandchildren. I have no problem bringing them here to Libby 3 or 4 times a year. Even you have to admit that statistically its too small of a risk to get any type of aliment from breathing in Libby. Ill admit that may not have always been he case, but now I would rather be here that in any other place in the US.

What a waste of skin you are Bob.Keep the kids away. There will come a day Bob you will wish you had listen and not been such a jerk, when the first grandkid gets diagnosed with asbestos. Then what Bob? Your day will come and too bad about the children Grampa helped poison.Your a joke Bob. |

Mike: Its statistically too low.... They would get something from a visit to California way before anything in Libby would get them... You know that ...tell the truth. I worry that they would get hit by a golf ball more that getting asbestos. Still not going to move away from the golf course..... or Libby. |

PRNewswire/-- W.R. Grace & Co.(NYSE: GRA) is
pleased with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's announcement late Friday that there are no asbestos-related air quality problems in Libby, Montana. From 1963 to 1990, Grace operated a vermiculite mine in which tremolite asbestos was an associated mineral. In response to newspaper articles about the number of people with asbestos-related disease in Libby, the EPA began a study to determine whether Grace's now closed operations pose an on-going health hazard to people who live there. "Given that asbestos must be inhaled in large quantities over a long period of time to be dangerous, this finding of clean air in Libby is very significant," said Bill Corcoran, Grace's vice president of public and regulatory affairs. "We are also pleased with the results to-date of the in- home testing, which shows that the air in Libby homes is no different from the air found in homes throughout the country." Paul Peronard, the EPA's on-scene coordinator, released the latest results from air monitoring and in-home testing during a three-day conference in Libby to discuss asbestos and the government's role there. Peronard reported that he had discovered only trace amounts of asbestos in both air and dust samples taken from 119 homes in and around Libby and, under the government's current risk assessment program, there is no risk to the people who live in those homes. |
