I am trying to obtain my Great grandmothers medical records from her long stay in Topeka State Hospital. She was committed there sometime in 1915?(+5 yrs)and was there until she was moved to a rest home about 1953 or so.
I know that the hospital is no more, but I'm hoping someone knows where the records are so I can send a request to them. |

I need to know if anyone knows what newspapers, were around between 1915 through 1920 in the Topeka, KS area that reported the news about criminal/police activity.

The Kansas Historical Society keeps copies of most newspapers on microfilm. You can order the appropriate issues. I would address your question to them. |

Upon doing research to find a client's medical record from her stay in the Kansas State Hospital in the early 60', I found that the Kansas State Historical Society has archived records from 1870 to 1954. When refer to SRS(Social Rehabilitation Services) I was told they had records from the mid 1970's till it closed in 1997. The guy at the historical society said there has been word of records destroyed between 1954 and the mid 70's. I am not sure why they were destroyed, but I am certain it was to protect those running the place because of the mental health practices of the time. I know my client doesn't want anything to do with psychiatricts to this day. Crimes were committed and the destroyer of the evidence is evidently free.

Thank you for the info.:) I will put this in the notes section of my FTM for reference, The papers for the patients commited to the hospital are "sanitized", when the records are found. I lucked out and for a small fee the KSHS was able to locate some of her records and some letters from family to her. the letters weren't sanitized, but the hospital, we believe, had cut out words or simply cut the paperwork in half. I did receive a piece of the record which as the word "parolled" at the top of it which confirms that she was committed there by the courts. Lisa @ KSHS believes this as well. She told me that there aren't alot of records from TSH and was not sure she would've been able to find anything. This find really surprised both of us.:) |

I too am looking for info on my Great Grandfather, who was @ TSH. He died there 07-14-1931 and listed on the granite wall, I'd like to know why he was there, and how long. I will also try and contact the KSHS. If anyone has any ore suggestions please advise. thank you !

Kevin,
When you contact the KSHS, they'll do a search, but it will cost about $20, non-refundable. The search they do is pretty extensive but well worth it. Hope it helps. Jean
