Gotta wonder if that fire was the result of some stupid idiot tossing their lit cigarette out the window.

This is complete BS, just goes to show how jacked this state is. To completely close down a 100 mile section of the only north south evacuation route (I-95) on a sunday is completely unexceptable. We saw no attempt what so ever to extinglish this "brush fire" ie helicopters, planes, massive fire dept response. Just the typical let it burn it self out attidude. To hell with the hundreds of thousands of tax paying citizens that where left to fend for themselves

well maybe if you actually paid attention you'd know that the firefighters are spread around everywhere because there was a bunch of small fires in palm bay and theres tons of flames at i-95. they don't have enough people. there was citizen patrol all over palm bay directing traffic because of everybody trying to find an alternate route since there were so many roads closed and palm bays not even the worst. this isn't about you having to find an alternate route, its about all the people who live here whos homes are in danger and with the wind blowing like it is spreading this fire, there main concern is getting it under control so it doesn't threaten anybody rather than just extinguish parts of it as it jumps around and spreads like crazy since it won't be stopped that way.

I don't understand something here,
I95, US1 and Babcock roads are North - South. They shutdown I95 and US 1 but not Babcock which lies between them. Can someone please explain that??????

If you have a swimming pool, you can now protect your home from brush fires moving into your area. This pool fire hose system is installed into the pool plumbing and allows you to wet your roof before the fire department comes. The demand has been huge for this in South Florida lately. Check it out at www.poolprotectyourhome.com

I live in the midst of all this mess and have been in this area for many years. We just had a major brush fire in Viera the first week of May. I-95 is not the only evacuation route, so the 10+ miles that were closed may have been an inconvenience, but is better to close the Interstate than have some freaked out person trying to evacuate, drive down the Interstate and kill someone else trying to evacuate. The stretch of road that was closed also happens to be the location of MANY, MANY cross over, head on, fatality crashes which is another good reason for it to have been closed. If you lived south of all the fires, you could have easily gotten off the Interstate at any East/West cross road, and either taken A1A north (beautiful route with ocean views, albeit a bit slow with all the traffic lights), or you could have cut to the west, hopped on the Turnpike, traveled Northwest to Orlando, then cut back to the East on highway 50 which runs directly east out of Orlando. Both choices a bit inconvenient, but the alternative could have proved DEADLY.

Hi V. Agree with you. Am also a Viera resident and watched that brush fire with some concern from our backyard in Heron's Landing.

And on the subject of I-95 crashes; was reminded of one involving an Airman I worked with many, many years ago. Apparently he dozed off while driving home from a party at PAFB and crossed the median and killed himself and the driver of the oncoming car he impacted. Ray

I'm on Flicker Court. My cul-de-sac backs right up to where the 50 foot flames were that night. I'm on the Corner, so I was about 150 ft. from the flames. Thank goodness the wind that night was blowing to the west, otherwise the cul-de-sac would be gone. My husband spent all night that night on my neighbors roof with the neighbor, keeping the roof wet. The Cocoa Beach FD finally staged in our cul-de-sac, and knocked the fire down. We are planning to do something special for them next weekend (everyone in our cul-de-sac). The trunk of my car is still full of family photo albums from where I had prepared to evacuate that night. That night we were all praying for a Cat 1 hurricane. That's how crazy (and scary) it was.

Ahhh..know exactly where you are. I probably drove right past you that night. I was trying to figure out where the fire was..fist thought when seeing the flames was that it was right behind us. And yep, we were indeed lucky the winds went that direction..and given the ferocity of the flames, think more than the cul-de-sac would have become engaged. And know what you mean about praying for a hurricane; was thinking at the time that I was sorry I was happy about our drought. And, when you see the FD guys, tell them thanks for us all.

Yep, will do! Nice chatting with you neighbor! Take Care during hurricane season, and maybe we'll see you out and about in the neighborhood. Vickie

Vickie,
And enjoyed chatting with you as well...and, if/when we have another neighborhood picnic, maybe we can say "hi" in person (since I/we no longer participate in the "slow spokes" bike outings on Saturday mornings..lol)
