Reminds me of a story a few years ago involving a man who nearly severed his penis while trimming his hedges.

Are there more idiots around nowdays or is it just that the media is reporting more of these kinds of stories?

Just their way to give you types fodder to make fun of someone injured in an accident.

Not really.

Thousands of people are injured - some seriously - in accidents every day. These accidents are commonly ignored. The types of accidents that warrant reporting - and maybe ridicule - are accidents where people injured themselves doing something most rational people would never do, or using something (tool, vehicle, weapon, appliance, etc.) in a way that invites injury, or even death.

For instance, I put a big bump on my head while climbing out from under my porch one day - after repairing some steps. That's a reasonable accident that's not newsworthy. Even if I'd opened up a big gash on my head while doing this it wouldn't have been worth reporting on.

That's a far cry from a guy trying to dry a wet carpet with a blowtorch and ending up burning his house to the ground, or some fool trying to work underneath his car while it's "jacked up" on a stack of paperback books and having the car fall on him, pinning him underneath it and having to call the fire department to come free him.
