This is a wonderful project that our family participates in each year. For myself, I like to choose the older kids who are often passed by in favor of the little ones who are more "fun" to buy for.

Have someone on your Christmas list who really doesn't need anything, but you want to get a gift for them? Why not choose a name from the tree, buy some gifts, and present that person with a photo of the things you bought as your gift to them?

My Opinion

That sounds like a great idea Kathie. I buy for a child too as I can each year. Some years it's just one and some years it's two. Buying a child a gift in someone elses name is a terrible idea. That is not a gift, it's a shaft to get out of giving the other person a gift. I would never recommend that unless it's a memorial gift in memory of a loved one. A living person would rightfully be hurt.

The "living people" I have done it for have been deeply touched and thanked me - and have gone on to do it for others (including myself). Guess it depends on the person and their interpretation of the spirit of Christmas. It's still buying a gift - not getting out of buying anything, just directing the gift to where it is most needed.(And I probably spend more than I would have otherwise!)

My siblings and I started doing this a while ago, and everyone is much happier. Each year a different person chooses a charity, and everyone makes a donation to that charity in the person's name. Next year is my turn, and I am already trying to narrow it down. None of us needs another t-shirt or coffee table book!

Some retailers stocked Christmas items well before Halloween this year. Makes it less special to me. Nothing against "Angel Tree."
