This is a decision made in haste and not thought out or discussed. As is the norm for the WF Admin. Allowing only the chief a take home vehicle is asking for an increase in expenses later.

Take home vehicles give each officer a sense of ownership and pride in "their" vehicle. In doing so, they are maintained at a much higher leverl. As a fleet vehicle, that places one person in charge of maintenance and asking for assistance in getting even routine maintenance taken care of. As a fleet vehicle, the attitude is "get me through my shift and if it breaks down later, oh well, not my problem."

Not to mention response time just dropped drastically in the event of a disaster of any kind.

This is a topic the Admin. needs to address and gather information on. Check with surrounding agencies, not just local, but out of county and state. The cost savings in comparison from fleet to take home more than makes it worth it to allow them to be taken home.

But, then again, someone on the Council has a boner for someone else and thinks this is how to save money and trouble another. Not looking out for the overall best interest of the citizens. But, then again, this is not surprising from this Admin.

Last night had problem.Went to police department to talk to officer. He advised he had headache. Its just too bad when you work midnights. Why all the fuss about squad cars.Buy them bicyles. There too lazy to leave the office. If you talk too loud, you.ll be told to lower your voice. You might wake up the sleeping Firemen. Now thats what I call Police work. You don,t like whhat I say Ben!!you know where I live.Once the THEE GIRL is beaten to death,I,ll find you!!!!!!!!!!

So the officers don't get take home cars but the chiefs do. OK so I can see firemen not taking a truck home everynight and agree the fire chief would need to get somewhere in a hurry and he don't live that far out of town. But the police chief is quite a ways more out. So does he get to keep his cause of his political drinking buddies and not have to drive his own car back and forth or what? How about the cops that live in town or atleast the two townships WF is in keep their take home cars but if they live outside the city or township limits then no take home cars. And I don't mean they can get a PO box or an address for a friend or family member and call it OK. I mean a real residence that the car will be parked at and the cop lives at. Chew on that for awhile...

This is a subject which has created much debate on the Daily American blog site. Personally, I am totally against those officers taking home their patrol cars. It does nothing to eliminate the criminal element or to dissuade those who would comment crimes to remain honest. Most towns DO NOT allow this self serving activity to flourish among their public servants.
I had a discussion with a friend of mine who lives in another Southern Illinois community. I was surprised to find out that most towns or cities require their police officers to live within the district in which they are employed. We,(West Frankfort), live by a very old "saying" in order to define the residential requirements. Something which refers to the distance that a crow flies, involving pastures, corn fields, and the distance of six miles. Basically, the distance from our town must be calculated through fields, grasslands, water, etc., not requiring one to actually live within our city limits. Therefore, we have an officer who lives in Royalton, and for a considerable amount of time, one who lived in Harrisburg.
When gasoline topped out at $4.00+, the price paid by our community in order to employ those officers was considerable, AND they were allowed to drive their vehicles home. Outrageous!!
As for those party animals which can be found at various times of the day hanging out in our local watering establishments, to know that they are also employs of our town just further sickens me. I am appalled at the behavior of our "mayor". Things cannot change too quickly for me!!

The behavior of the mayor is mild compaired to other so called leaders in the community. Where are the morals of those pillars who should be providing reliable support to our community. Is that what a "pillar" should provide? The support is not for the communtiy thats for sure. It's more for self gratifiacation.

Amen Unknown! Those known as "pillars" should be held to a higher standard. We have held them up and given them a voice of authority, yet they just seem to abuse their positions. Politics is very rarely viewed as an occupation which brings out the best in those who are elected, yet we remain hopeful. It seems that appointing these officials is no longer enough. We must continue to monitor their behavior to ensure that the inch we have given them is not stretched into a mile. This is something that no longer makes me sad or wistful, it just infuriates me!

Daily Horoscope for January 1

Libra

Happy New Year, Libra!. How's that poor old body feeling this morning?! If you're having a gathering, include casual acquaintances or newcomers as if they were one of the family. You're a real social animal and you know how to put people at their ease. This is a wonderful talent: not only do you have a network of friends and social contacts, as well as business ones, but you have the ability to bring others together. Perhaps you should start a dating agency this year!
