I live in the Nannie Thaxton house. I spent a good deal of time in the Bedford courthouse to try and learn something. Your best bet is starting there, then going to the Bedford museum. I know that the town was founded by David Thaxton, who built Ivy Pillers located on Penicks Mill Rd. just past the train tressel.

My dad has told me a lot about the history of Thaxton, VA. It was named after a Thaxton (David, I believe) whom was my great-grandfather. He donated land to the railroad when they were building it back during the Civil War. He was a big tobacco farmer. Thaxton's had a lot of territory back in the day. The areas known as: Flint Hill, Thaxton, and Moneta are all named after them. There's a lot of history behind these places -- my great-aunt is still alive to tell these stories and it's just amazing to hear her talk about the history of the area! Hope this helps!

You all should write the history down. Or video tape it. What a great thing to have familty around to still tell the old stories.
