the difference between gospel music and christian music is that gospel is soul music that is energetic and christian music is very soft and smooth. it has nothing to do with color, but however, gospel music started with the african americans in the 1920s. matter of fact, even before the 1920s....

hi,but can somebody tell me,what is the difference between spirituals and gospel songs?
|
|
I like both "christian" and "gospel" music. As an African American, I find that gospel music (white or black) speaks to the sorrow, anguish, and desperation in my heart that only Christ can fill. The lyrics often point out the hardships of life and speak to the desperate need for Christ. They speak to my "soul." I don't experience that same connection with my inner anguish when I listen to Christian music. There is a place for both in my life; I enjoy both. I just prefer not to mix secular sounds with music about God. Artists in both camps are guilty of this. You just have to be picky and willing to look around til you find something that fits your needs and is still holy.

Now, my understanding of spirituals are that they originated from songs slaves sung during slavery days. Again they speak to the anguish and desperation. But, they are a direct product of that era. Gospel is not necessarily black or white, perhaps southern, but it is a genre that artist are still contributing to today. Negro spirituals are only from that era.
Some music history student may be able to answer this more accurately but my response is based only on my knowledge to date. |

I personally think that gospel and spiritual musics is the same because they sound the same. One day you may think you hear a gospel song on the radio when its really a spiritual song. It may be confusing thats why i would say its the same.

There is no Spiritual difference. The only difference is Radio Format that separate them by genre. Gospel music being the type of music that Black ppl listen to and the Christian music being what White ppl listen to. Christian music is more guitar driven and rock-n-roll type. Both of them achieve the same spiritual effect as long as they are anointed.

To me the difference is that gospel is more soulful than christian music. Also, when I listen to gospel music I tend to focus on the delivery of the song. If someone sounds horrible i find myself lost but with Christian music its not like that. No matter who sing the song, I find myself in tears yearning for God. Btw...I am black so it's definitely not a racial matter. Be Blessed :)

Now we have a the "Contempory Christian" music that follows a 7-11 format. A seven word phrase repeated eleven times ,with guitar and drums getting louder each repeat to stir up the congregation. This is commonly used in the storefront "worship and praise centers" set up in shopping centers and strip malls by self appointed ministers who got their theology degree online. Give me the old time religion and gospel music anytime.

'Gospel' as the name implies means 'good news'. a song about a change in govt, return of peace to a war-torn zone or death of a tyrant leader all in d name of being a beleiver are all gospel. many times they are written out of passion and music experience & has little or nothing to do with d soul or salvation(though d lyrics & instrumentations may be arranged to produce such effect). xtian music has it foundation in christ, many times composed under inspiration thru d holy spirit & always with a divine msg.

No diffrence, just different sound. I think radio stations should play them together. It creates more diversity and probably a new feeling for God. So many Christians are so focused on genre and dont have an open ear to other types Music that glorifies God. Being Black my self, I listen to artist from Skillet to Shierly Ceasar :P
