More Retail stores? There is a limit how many people and their money can support in retail in our area. Ever notice that for every new store built an older location gets vacated? I know interstate 70 is our conduit to success for retail, however there is a saturation point. Free Enterprise is great, however selling the fairgrounds at 1/4 the market value is blatant thievery. If the same parking lot and traffic flow pattern is used that is a trademark for this well known Construction Company, it will be a nightmare. South End Projects like Taco Bell, Kroger South,Burger King, look like a 5th grader did the site plan layout. Empty building lots like the former putt putt miniature golf site do nothing more than force a small company out of business for what - another business. We are not adding retail in this town-we are just adding new locations and forcing all the smaller and family owned businesses to close. Plainfield has a distinct difference to Terre Haute- They have frontage access roads to their developments, and they don't ammend them for anyone, regardless of their corporate wallet size. I have confidence in our County Fair Board- These people aren't stupid-they know exactly what the value of that large piece of ground is worth. As far as the single entrance/exit shown on the artist's rendering of this proposed development, yeah that will work real well,And i suppose during fairground activities they think Johnson Ave, and Union Road will handle all that traffic! We still do not have turn arrows at the traffic light on Johnson Ave. Put your retail development on the 72 acres you want to swap for the fairgrounds if it is soooo valuable. Or better yet, If they are so wanting to help the community-put your retail center where International Paper is, and the old W.E.T. Property. And referring to the fairgrounds as swampland won't fool any of us.

Its called Greed
Can you Say Greed?
Can you say Gibson?
Can you say setup?
It's all about to hit the roof and Terre Haute wont be able to do anything about it for it will be to late.

I Agree totally. The chosen few who are behind all these wonderful improvements {Sarcastically} are sick with GREED. there will never be an end to what they want to take control of and own. Burke is one, true. but he was just a pawn. promised a piece of the pie in the end. Apparently his piece of the pie wasn't big enough. That's why he's being so persistant to get back his position of mayor.

Now our Esteemed County Government is going to re-zone for ANOTHER restaurant?????? Isn't there an empty restaurant building sitting right to the north of where they plan to build on county property? This County election needs to be a shake-up....Vote Out The Incumbants!!!!!!! Where is the original charter for the fairgrounds that specified what the ground was intended to be used?

The fair grounds is not county property so it is not the county officials to say what can or cannot be done with the property.

Nothing our govt decides to do, local or nationwide, surprises me anymore. But if they want better turnouts for the fair and races, they should consider some major improvements. Have you seen the fair grounds in other communities? They are beautiful. Ours are a bunch of pole barns. The TH action track is a great track! It could draw a lot more races and gain some much needed attention to Terre Haute. But like so many of the resources here, they are downplayed and ignored to keep people out!! They wonder why ISU grads all leave but what is here to encourage them to stay? Its like the Terre Haute house, an ugly eyesore that remained forever until someone threw enough money at it to get the attention of the Hulman/George family. The hotel is nice and all, but its at the corner of 40 and 41, people. That IS the true crossroads. A House of Blues there would have been SWEEEET!!

You have to look deep to find when these kind of things are brought up, it's the way our local government works. Anywhozz...it's all ready in the works, the Vigo Area Plan Commission gave it a big thumbs up. Now it goes before our county leaders, the commissioners (who are only looking out for our best interest) for a vote. I'm sure that they'll think of the people first just like they did for the residents of Woodgate in the Cobblestone Crossing fiasco. How much traffic is this restaurant going to have when a person has to wind around & come in off of Union Rd in front of Bogeys? Heck, just close off the drag-strip & it can be used as the access road.

Some of the smaller or more rural counties don't have a big fancy fairgrounds. For a county the size of Vigo the fairgrounds are pretty nice and they are much better than when I was a 4Her. Pole barns are common in farm country and nothing to stick your nose in the air about. This county used to be a strong agricultural community until it became too citified and began to sneer down it's collective nose at the roots of this area. Most of the ISU grads aren't from Terre Haute and never planned to stay here. It's doubtful the fairgrounds played a roll in their decision.

Who is the Chick-fil-A franchisee that is involved in this debacle? It isn't the corporation, it is someone who has a franchise license. Besides, what business will be next? Maybe another Starbucks? Then maybe another dollar bargain store.....then a couple of mini mart gas stations or car washes.... this is the beginning of the end.

How much more can the "few" suck from the county teat? I swear to you, I am voting against the incumbents in this election. Local, state and national..... I am not talking Democrat nor Republican... I am talking Incumbants...GONE! Go get a real job and remember what its like to bust your ass!
