I'm dumbfounded as to why there has been no media coverage nor any police aid regarding the multiple break-ins that occurred over Thanksgiving Break. My house was ransacked and about $3000 worth of belongings were taken. Two other houses near here were also broke into. The cops simply told us "third one today" when we called the cops to have them come check it out. Since the cops are refusing to report crimes like this, the crime rate listed for Terre Haute is completely invalid. This city is dangerous and the police are not here to protect you. May God have mercy on other students like me who made the mistake of obtaining their higher education in this awful place.

It's the season for breakins and it wont't taper off until after the New Year. Worthless thieves will also break into your car in broad daylight. As for media coverage, it's a holiday weekend and neither of the local stations report much of anything on any weekend let alone a holiday. Cops don't release info in this kind of thing, it's all online. Media outlets access this themselves and choose what they want to report. If a police report is complete it's online for the media to gather, if the media is inclined.
Students aren't the only victims, it's every bill paying, tax paying, law abiding citizen who gets the bill and often the robbery too.

Because the police and the courthouse have deals with the local new outlets to verify every story that they run when it concerns specific people and their families. Which may or may not be the case here. Don't believe me? Call up there and ask.

"police are not here to protect you" you mean that you are just now figuring that out?!

Locks will only keep honest people honest. The professional thieves are out every year around this time like modern day robin hoods stealing from the middle class to give to themselves. Unless you are guarding it personally or really want to invest money in security, your property is at the whim of anyone who wants it. Police in America are reactionary, the system is designed to protect the freedom and liberty of criminals. It's not just Terre Haute. If someone refused to take a report for the theft at your home make sure you have the right agency (sheriff's won't take reports in the city) or get hold of the highest official you can reach in the department to get the lazy ass fired.

My home has not been broken into but both of my cars have been broken into. A window was busted out into my daughters carseat luckily I keep nothing in them of value but whoever did it also losened the lug nuts on one of my tires. I guess out of rage because there was nothing to steal. The "police" told me that they couldn't do anything about it unless I catch them in the act. Motion activated webcams have been set up and my 100lb dog is outside at night now. I will not feel sorry for the person that he attacks. He's not vicious but he protects his home and his kids

This happens EVERY year around thanksgiving and christmas breaks. College kids etc leave for several days and get burglarized.
