Wolves in WV

Am I the only one that thinks the state needs to release wolves back into the wild in our state? They were once native to our state 100 years ago until they were all killed off.

I don't think we need wolves because we have bears and they are the state's animal.We pretty much have alot of wild animals the way it is.

Wolves, look what the coyotes are doing to the deer herd there will be no deer left with wolves and then they will go after all the farm animals.

Look what people are doing to our wildlife. W.V people are so ignorant and trashy. The don't care about streams and wild life all you people worry about is the first of the month and beer and cigarettes. I say bring the wolves back and get rid of the people

You see what the DNR thought bring coyotes to control the turkeys and deers..They didn't think about the over breeding.. Now poeple shoot the coyotes for fun.. We need to have REDBACK WOLVES to control the coyotes. but this brings up the same problem we have with coyotes..They should of spayed 75% before releasing to control. Most hunters would like to hunt thorphy bucks and long bread turkeys. What we have isn't that great.We had a bad winter in 2009 and alot of deers straved.. I'm very unhappy also that they lowered the weigh on the black bear to be less they 100 lbs. MAN has always ruined thing they touch.. The DNR needs to enforce the hunting laws better then they do now. To much baiting and 4 wheelers used.. Be a real hunter and walk and listen and see what all you have missed with the noisy 4 wheelers and baiting...

No way to not Baiting. I am a master at baiting. i kill a trophy every year. Of course i follow a 8 point or bigger 4 years or older rule. So i will continue to use what works. After all these years i have perfected my style of hunting and Baiting, thus making me known in our camp as the Master of Baiting.

Wolves become less afraid of humans than other animals as they get used to their environment. All we need is to read about wolves carrying off a baby playing in their backyard.

The coyotes are not brining our deer population down. If our deer population is so low why do we have hunting seasons? Hunting seasons are not to hunt for fun it’s to control the population. The wolves were here before and they did not kill off all the deer so why would they now?

There are also bear attacks so should we get rid of them too?
What about mountain lions kill them off also? Don't forget domestic dogs they attack more often than wild animals. So the rare chance of a wolf attack should not be a reason to not release wolves back into their natural habitat.

Yes, a rare chance of attack should be a reason not to release wolves back into their "natural habitat"....By the way, their once "natural habitat" is not natural to them anymore. We are seeing this with increase bear sightings in urban areas. Wolves are more aggressive than bears.

Releasing wolves back into an environment no longer suited for them is very risky.

O wow now under educated hillbillies think they are deer biologist's. How funny. Wv dnr will never compete with other big buck producing states, but you,guys can keep on dreaming. Why not enforce a 8 point of bigger rule For the gun season. People here are savages they kill any buck with one spike on it's head. Point restriction program would be great.I would allow junior hunters and disabeled to take a buck with 3 points on one side though.

As for your red wolves they are actually a wolf/coyote hybrid.

DNA analysis consistently shows that all existing red wolves carry coyote genes, though it is not known if this is a result of recent habitat destruction by man, or whether Red Wolves have always been hybrids. This has caused a problem for Canid taxonomy, as hybrids are not normally thought of as species, though the convention is to continue to refer to red wolves as a subspecies of wolf, Canis lupus rufus, with no mention of the coyote taxon, latrans.[2][3]

Ummm... You migh want to do your research also. The article clearly states * Some of this “article” is fiction.* There is no current plan for releasing wolves in WV or VA. I guess I will just have to stick to my wolf mix.

What does it matter how big their antlers are? Do you eat deer antlers? You must mean you only kill for sport. Your probably one of the people that just cut off the head and dump the body on the side of the road.

I'd like to see wolves, elk, and buffalo running free again in there native habitat. I have yet to hear of a black bear, mountain lion, black panther, or coyote attack in this state in the past 50 years. Before someone tells me that a mountain lion and black panther are pretty much the same thing, I specified black panther because I have seen them here in Upshur County several times. I have yet to see a yellow one, but I know people who have.

Its all about building better bucks, But what would west virginia people know about improving genetics in animals, when they cant do it with the people. It would be a waiste of time for me to explain the long term effects a program like this could do for the state. It would range from better deer quality to increased revenue for the state.Guess you are comfortable to being the laughing stock of the country, for being known for inbreeding and dinky deer.

How exactly do you propose building better bucks? Releasing natural predators won't affect the size of the bucks. Unless it would decrease the size of the herd allowing the one's that survive to have a better diet. That's why they are all so small now, over population. Despite popular belief, age doesn't determine the size of the antlers....vegetation does. You could have a 4 point this year and next year the same buck could be a 12 point. It's all in what they eat!
