Murrieta plans $2 million veteran memorial

The city of Murrieta wants to build a $2 million memorial to honor veterans.

Mayor Rick Gibbs, a Vietnam veteran, said in a Riverside Press-Enterprise story posted Sunday he thinks veterans would come from all over to visit the monument.

The memorial would consist of 5- to 10-foot-tall granite walls laser-etched with war images throughout American history from the Revolutionary War to the Iraq conflict.

A volunteer commission is working with Temecula-based architect David Neault on the memorial design, which would stand in the Town Square near the police station. Read more

I am a veteran and though I appreciate the city trying to recognize veterans, I think that there are other issues and needs that our city could better spend our hard earned tax money on. Building a 2 million dollar memorial is a terrible waste of taxpayers money. Many other Murrieta citizens and myself would rather see this money spent to complete and repair streets like Hunter Rd. With gas prices so high, many of us who reside on the east part of the city and have kids attending Murrieta Vista High School want streets like Hunter Rd. connected thus saving us valuable time and gas money.

As a wive of a Veteran, this is a waste of tax payers money. (My husband agrees). We have no problem for the idea but rather than using tax money why don't they have some fund raisers and use donations to build the monument. Taking money away from the roads and other important Murrieta needs is out of control and they need to be held liable.

Although I respect and appreciate the intent to recognize veterans, I agree with both the previous posters. At a time when Murrieta is knee-deep in foreclosures, infrastructure shortcomings and budget issues affecting area schools, there are clearly things that are far more important to spend our tax dollars on in the immediate future. As a former Marine residing in Murrieta, I do not believe this a wise use of our tax dollars at this time.
I'm sure the counter-argument is that this memorial would bring veterans into the area who wold contribute to the local economy. It's a nice thought, but unless the mayor would is willing to sign a statement right now that he personally guarantees the residents of Murrieta X-millions (X being whatever the city's residents feel is a proper return on the an expense like this given the other things that need more urgent attention) of dollars coming into our local economy as a result of its being built, I say we have more immediate and urgent things to take care of in our community that this money could be spent on. Let's not take our eye off the ball here.
