There's Lake County Commissioner Jimmy Conner spending $5,631 of taxpayer money on out-of-county travel, redundantly tagging along with the commission chairman, who is the county's official representative when it comes to lobbying missions.
So what's he got to say about what Lake County residents got from his nine trips in two years, including two runs to Washington, D.C., to lobby?
That's because the project was on a list of specific items that commission Chairman Welton Cadwell was sent to Washington to address with local representatives. Conner simply duplicated the meetings Cadwell and a representative from the county's Washington lobbying firm held with members of Congress.
Conner had to conduct his meetings at different times because Florida's law about open meetings prevents him from lobbying in tandem with Cadwell. He said he was "truly proud" to have been part of a "team effort" to win the money.
Conner said he doesn't like to travel.
"I like my living room, my remote, my chair and especially my bed," he said. "I could stay home and focus on my insurance business."
That's precisely what Conner should do in the future, considering that he is merely duplicating what the commission chairman already is sent to and that he cannot show concrete results from his trips.
UPDATE: August 2012, Jimmy Conner never offered to nor did he reimburse the Citizens of Lake County for this unnecessary and wasteful trip. The $5,631 equals approximately 4 average households property tax bill for one year. Jimmy Conner you did not solve any problem, you are the problem. You may get what you asked for.
