I can understand the school system wanting to do that. It would save money in lots of ways and would be great for the staff and students as far as having a three day weekend every week. I feel it would cause a hardship for parents though since families where both parents work would have to get a babysitter for only one day. It is a shame though that the price of gas will be cutting into the supplies that our students need. They already had to cut out the Back to School Extravaganza they had at the Mall each year. Granted that was a cut back that won't hurt as much since most schools don't require the students to have their own supplies anymore. But just an example of cutbacks before the year even begins.

The Pulaski School System will be running on a regular 5 day school week. If you'd like to know the exact school year calendar you can visit their website at www.pulaski.net and it will show you their breaks and days out.
I personally feel since their was no increase in educational funding for this school year, the decision to keep the school week a five day verses a four day week was a poor one. The Pulaski School System uses 7,000 miles of diesel fuel A DAY! Yes. I said a day. Now, sit back and figure out how much money the system would have saved having cut one day out a week for the school year and rolling that money into education.
Just my opinion.

my children went to pulaski schools for awhile now we live in russell co. the school supplies they need here is ridiculus!!!! You go broke just buying what they need then to top it off the teachers want so many Plastic folders in different colors, then found out last year that when the kids take in what all is on the list that they have to give of their stuff to kids whose parents didn't buy the supplies...so ya it is aggravating

My mom teaches in the PC school system. The only reason they considred it was to save money on gas because of all the money it costs to run the buses. But it was only ever talked about. There are many reasons they wont do it.

There were tons of cutbacks in the school system. There were a ton of teachers cut at the Elem level, every dept lost people. They cannot cut days to 4 days a week b/c the state requires in order for students to get credit for their classes, they have to attend that certain class for a certain amount of hours. If they only go 4 days a week, the students will have to go year around just to make up those hours. Also, even though there will not be a back to school extravanganza, the schools individually will be giving out school supplies and teachers are allotted an amount of money to buy classroom supplies, so parents shouldn't have to provide anything.

Even though teachers are allotted a certain amount of money....that by no means covers the cost to purchase supplies for all the students in his or her class. Teachers spend sooooo much of their own money for the students in their classrooms. A parent can spend less than 5.00 and get their child the school supplies they need.

Hypothetically, if the schools did switch to a four day week, the other four days of the school week would be extended.(I don't know the exact times, but the following is just an example.)

Say the students now attend school 6 hours a day, five days at week, that's 30 hours a week. On a four day schedule, the students would attend school approx 7.5 hours a day, which would still be 30 hours a week.

What would be the point in a 4 day school week, if school year was extended by 9 weeks?

That is exactly why it was not discussed further. It wouldn't benefit anyone, and state law dictates how long children can be sitting at a desk during a day. If the state didn't dictate hours of school in a day, there would be more school systems only going 4 days a week. Didn't anyone notice that schools in the state start around the same time and let out at the same times, give and take a few minutes? They would have to actually be at school about 8 or more hours a day, b/c they would have to have more breaks, snacks, etc. It is governed almost like the child labor laws dictate how long 15, 16, and 17 year olds can work in a day and week. And would you really want a five year old sitting in classes all day for 7 or 8 hours? It is hard on them.

Actually this has passed in one county in Kentucky and several places in other states. it is actually only 50 more minutes a day after it is broke down. It will be given more thought.

Do you not understand English? What do you not understand? The point is, the Pulaski Co. schools will not be going to a 4 day week. Why don't you go back under YOUR rock and wait for the 1st of the month so you can get your check!
