A Prom Divided

After reading the story about segregated senior proms in Mt. Vernon and other communities in Georgia, I realized the degree to which this illuminated how very ignorant, Republican, redneck and racist the residents of Georgia are.

I was surprised to read about the separate proms. Why is this still going on? I lived in Savannah in the 90's and the prom was open to all at Jenkins High School.

Really, white folks, it's the 21st century and well past time to join it. Segregated proms? Really? Sherman was too easy on you traitors.

The white students seemed happy in the picture, if that's what they want I'd say it's OK, isn't there something called 'freedom of association'?

To the comment fr Portland Oregon, why are you blaming it on the whites? If they want it seperated so be it. The NAACP doesnt have any whites. They are alot of things seperated. Its just some can get by with it more than others. It is freedom of choice, so get over it and move on.

Whether it's the Jews, Blacks, Homosexuals or Sex Offenders (do they even know what a sex offender is???) it's the same old Conservative, Christian??? South persecuting and doing it's thing regardless of what the Bible teaches. Guess they will never learn how to respect and treat others.

The segregated proms are not a bad thing not many people that has ever been to one, have a problem with it. Blacks and whites enjoy having there own prom, neither group are being degraded. The only people that have a problem with segregated proms are the ones that has never been to one. You know the IGNORANT people like you!

I am from the area this happened in and I am neither ignorant,racist or redneck. I'm not a very political person,and normally I don't get involved with these things,however I thought I would let the world know that things are not always as they are perceived to be.I have friends of every race and nationality. (ok maybe not every nationality but you get my drift.)My best friend is from Mariestad,Sweden,I have several from the UK.I speak proper English. The south has traditions that are different, not necessarily good ones, just different.That doesn't mean that everyone in the area is stupid,so don't judge what you don't understand.

I graduated from MCHS in 2002. It is a very racist school, and a very racist community. The NY Times article barely scratched the surface. I am glad I left that haven of bigotry. I will never set foot in the south again. The residents of Montgomery County are so quick to say "I am not racist, I have lots of black friends." This is a lie. A friend is someone u have in ur wedding, someone u talk on the phone with, someone who babysits ur kids, someone who u vacation with. Those people in Mount Vernon would bring back slavery if they could.

Segregated proms should become extinct just like the dinosaurs. Any town that is stupid enough to have them in this day and age should become a ghost town. I agree that the idiots in these racist, backwards, hick, podunk towns should join the twenty first century instead of remaining backwards. I'm white by the way.

well i have one question do you date blake people then. they wanted the prom the way it was just as bad as thw whith people did. all they want is for someone to feel sorry for them!!!!!!!!!!

well i went to that school too and had black friends too. that came and stayed at my house with and so did i at her house. the students are the ones that set the proms this way not the teacher or anybody else. so when they all vote for it to be this way, then why just hold the white kids accountable for this and not the black kids

I understand that the students, themselves want
the proms this way. People should tend to their
own business, in their own towns, and in their own
homes. Why do you people want to get involved in
something where you or your family does not live?
