Neither post is correct. The house that blew up was the home of Johnny Fee. He was one of Kelly's henchmen. The house was directly in back of the NK Reservoir. That took place in November of 1968. It was the night that Richard Nixon beat Hubert Humphrey to be precise.

Kelly resided on Upper Charles Avenue until he died. The house is still occupied by his daughter(s?). The house near St. Pete's was Sam's daughter, Minnie Carlucci's house. Sam's house was on Freeport Road in the vicinity of Krupa's FH.

In the early forties, Sam's house was on the corner of Manor Road and Freeport Road, across the street from Pimm's Store.

Pimm's Store is my office. I thought that Sam's house was one block over from here. The house that sits across the street from my office was built by Fred Monaco, the physiatrist at CGH. His parents owned a market on North Street and his brother, John, was active in local politics, including 2 terms as Mayor. Ironically, he was beaten by a write-in candidate whose family now lives in Fred's former house.

I think that the Mannarino house that exploded was in Allegheny Township.

I have been in your office many times - when it was Pimm's. I think the Monaco Market was about a block or two from Freeport Road. My Mother's parents, my grandparents lived one lot up from Freeport Road on Woodbury Rd. and my dad's parents lived on Parkview Dr. Sam's House was next to Freds on Manor Road and Freeport Road. Both houses were on Freeport Road. Is that stone wall and those big trees still across Freeport Road from your place?

Ambrose:
I just scanned that area and I see that there are newer houses on the corner of Parkview Dr and Freeport Rd., just across the street from you. I forgot about the house between the two on Freeport Rd. Monaco's is on Kimberly - Saw a black SUV on North street next to your office - is that yours?
There are also new buildings on Freeport Rd. between Woodbury and Parkview. I went down Manor and it look like the first hose is newer so it would have been the second house that Sam had for a while. I also went down Parkview to my Grandmothers house - it looks the same - the yard has changed a little.
That was really a stroll down memory lane.

Hi: I am planning a revision of my site to simplify many things that need to be simplified.
If you type www.parsec-santa.com/NewKensngton , and then click "enter" you will be taken to a menu page. I have enlarged the "To the Alumni Guest Book" and the "Sign Guest Book" links so you will see them. It is on the first part of the page.
Sam, I went to the site and clicked on Guest Book but that took me to a page that wants my guest book number.I filled out the other info but I still can't get to oldndirt's info. Any suggestions?

Alice, I'm no.115 in parsec Sam's guest book. You can find an email addy there to contact me. You may know my wife or her sisters. They graduated in 57, 61 and I think 63.
Alice - reread Olderndirt's email to you. If you go to the the number he gave you and you know his name just click on his email address to send him an email. I never received any information from you or you would see it on the Guest book page. If you still can't make that work, find someone who knows computers to give you a helping hand.

Doing research and after reading through a lot of the posts was wondering if someone could help me out. I've been putting away research for awhile now to possibly get enough to put a book together as a historian been my dream to write one. But I keep running into a brick wall on finding information on something.
I have all the stories of the former home of Gabriel "Kelly" Mannarino's blowing up but no one can remember when the fire was. Also finding no information in the documents about the era I have read.
Thank you for any help
I have the date of the explosion. Please contact me at maggiebnk at yahoo dot com.

If any of you are looking for an ideal charity for your next donation, consider Cookies for Our Troops. This organization was the dream child of Sam Lombardo, owner of Sam's Distributing in Arnold. This charity has absolutely no overhead. When they get the funds, they put together boxes which are shipped to soldiers serving our country all over the world. In addition to spending the money which is donated, many businesses give them products to ship to the troops. No donation is too small or too big. Send it to Cookies for the Troops, c/o Sam's Pop Shop, 5th Avenue, Arnold, PA 15068.

Thank you for helping with Cookies for the Troops!
There was a recent story in the Valley News Dispatch about some Vets who were helping pack things. Also of a Valley (former Ken Hi) High school senior who has made this project her Sr. commitment to help do anything they need to get things to area troops. If you ever stop at Sam's Pop Shop and Sam is there, he will show and tell great stories about the troops he hears from. He is very proud to help our troops, as he should be! Tell him thanks, just like you would any of our troops. Every little bit will help. Becky

At one time, the Golf Oasis had a rope tow on the hill and offered winter skiing. I think that that only lasted one season.
Grants was in the Hill Crest SC before Wards moved to LB. They moved from Hill Crest to the second building next to Wards. Penneys moved from Fifth Ave, NK to the former Grants location in HCSC. Then Grants went BK. At that time, Penneys moved into Grants location and Hills took over the Penneys location. Hills went BK and Ames took over the location. Ames went BK and the building stood empty for quite awhile. Then a cheap clothing store opened up there. It lasted about two years and then it went BK. The store front is still empty. The Hill Crest SC is a bad shopping center. The problem is that it is constructed in a manner that puts its anchor store in the corner where there is the least parking available.
I remember skiing at at the Oasis, it must have been around 1973. They also rented showmobiles, I think it was owned someone named Burghart(sp). He must have done well in the summer because he had snow making equipment, all that for the Oasis...

In the late 40's and early 50's my Dad took me to a barber shop in downtown NK. I was so young I hardly recall much about it. I believe it was either on 4th, 3rd, or 2nd ave. and somewhere 11th street or above. It was on or very near a corner and the name I remember is Hardy's and the name was pronounced "Jew-be" Hardy. Does that sound familiar to anyone?
In later years he always took me to "Sam and Auggie's" on the corner of Barnes and 10th st. The Barbers were Sam, Auggie and Merle.
Hardy's Barber Shop was owned by Juby Hardy. It was also a hangout for Juby's Syrian friends to chew the fat and play Gin Rummy.

If my recollection is correct, Sam and his wife Rose lived in a house at the corner of Elizabeth St and Highland Ave.

I believe you are correct. Sam and Rose lived with Minnie and Vic on Highland Ave. The house referred to previously, the one that exploded, was Kelly's "summer cottage" in Allegheny Twp.
