NM man attacked, killed by mountain lion

A Red Bone hound dog is a good guard against Cougar Cats, of course backed up by a 30 cal. pistol or rifle...Should have at least one 30 cal. and 2--3 Red Bone hounds...Never heard of a big cat getting through that defense...

If Mr. Winslow had any sense about him he would instead advise people to be aware of their surroundings and keep their handguns close and loaded.

As we have the largest Arizona population of the cats on the mountain behind our area I was advised to carry a .357 on solitary walks. We do have one large cougar who has been in the backyards and walking by our front doors at night or sleeping in a creekbed 30 feet from homes in the daytime. My warnings to neighbors who walk at night or with small children were appreciated by some and ignored by others. But I did what I thought was right in trying to make them aware of the danger. Most of them think my purchase of a cougar hunting license was unnecessary, but there is a $2500 fine if you kill one without it. Even if the cat is eating your dog you are not allowed to kill it unless it is attacking you.
It's ok. I don't walk at night, dawn or dusk. Better to use caution and watch your back. And take a few classes in shooting. It may save your life.

Remember: DO NOT RUN! Shout this out loud if it will help you remember and fight the urge to panic when facing a mountain lion unexpectedly! "Do Not Run!" Shout it at the creature also. I have carried a small pepper spray for years for the possible mountain lion encounter on the trails, but having utilized pepper spray in combat with a drunk human being when I was a CA peace officer, I would caution against one putting much hope in a spray, especially when facing a natural killing machine, an original "Terminator", like a mountain lion. Having heard what this creature can do to a school teacher on a CA trail, I would liken it to a run-in with a roaring chain saw! "DO NOT RUN!"
In fact, as I have said previously, if you go jogging, do so with other persons, or a dog, and don't cover both ears with Ipod-type earplugs! You have to always be aware of your surroundings!

Are you people stupid or what? We as a species are intruding on the living space of these beautiful animals NOT the other way around. This "thinking" of protection against something that was there before us and we decided to kill our way into their homeland is the type of thinking that got us into Iraq.

Why would anyone in his right mind want bathe and shave in the mountains where the lions live?

Yes, all life is precious but, animals have a right to life too. This man should not have been in location he was in, as if he where in his bathroom at home, or maybe he didn't have a home? Use common sense too!

Animals don't know right from wrong but, we do stay out of the mountains.
Try using your bathroom at home.

Me too, condolences to his family but, you have to be careful when you live around wildlife.

There is an organization that subsides protective pens that are Lion proof. They are based in California. I don’t know if they do any work in New Mexico, but here is there web address: www.mountainlion.org click on apply for a grant; they might be able to help protect your pets.
